G&L Club Part 4

Finally got my hands on one a vintage G&L. 1982 ash/rosewood L-1000, plenty of finish checking, weighs 8.3 lbs, ohsc.

The necks on these are so sweet, a mix of a wide, thin Fender P and a narrow, chunky Fender J... just right!

I can't wait to go to rehearsal and pull some dub sounds out of this bad boy.

Only G & L i've ever had is a Red Maple necked Lynx with the toothy headstock.

Had a warped neck so had to return it :'(

I think it would be great in a tele-style bass. Like a Robert De Leo Schecter style but more Fender-esque.

Other than replacing regular P/J pups with MFD's I don't see doing this, unless it's a custom build.

I guess if I was having a custom bass made I might choose to use MFD humbuckers like in the L2xxx series. 4-string and 5-string models are available from G&L for $120 and $130 each, which is pretty comparable to pickups from other companies. I could see making a custom bass or parts bass where the pickups were farther apart or a MFD P in the neck with a humbucker in the bridge.

What I'd really like to see is a quad-coil MFD humbucker so we could choose single or split-coil options. I'd love to be able to switch from single to humbucking to split!

Also, you CAN wire them for single coil. My BABE edition L2K was wired this way from the factory (outside coils) and there are many who have likewise modded theirs for split, series, parallel modes. It's a KILLER sound. The new M2000s series sound similar to that option in my opinion.

At first I thought you meant replacing stock pickup in a bass with MFD's, but then I realized it would work really well in a custom setup.

They can be wired for single coil but not for split coil - that's what I think would be cool. I mean the right half of the front coil matched with the left half of the rear coil.

Tonight I'm wiring my L2K Tribute with independent series/parallel and inner coil/parallel/outer coil switches. I've already removed the preamp (which I never use) and am installing a stacked volume. The front two switches will be the inner coil/parallel/outer coil switches for each pickup, the rear switch will be series/parallel for the bridge, and the 500k push/pull pot I'm using for the treble control will serve as the series/parallel switch for the neck pickup. I'm also replacing the series jumper wires with resistors which should eliminate the volume jump when going parallel > series.

Fingers crossed it works!

My newly used G&L L2000 Black and Maple. Can someone help me with the serial number as far as dating this? Serial Number is CLF 22577. Also how are you posting images large in your posts?

My new to me SB-1. Believe it's about a '96 from the serial, but you would swear it just came from the factory. I've been loving this thing more every time I pick it up.

Finally got the SB-12 up and running too -- great pair! I might just have to try out some flats just to see what all the hype is

It stuck out like crazy among all the black and sunburst basses in the store. Would have never thought I'd like it either, but after having "coffee table" basses and natural finished basses all these years, this is a step in a different direction for sure.

I replaced the 250k treble pot with a 500k and like the difference a lot. I also have changed the signal flow to go switches>volume>treble>bass>jack. What would be the tonal effect of replacing the 250k volume with a 500k volume?

and it would allow for series/outer single/parallel. How would I change it so I could have series/inner single/parallel? I'm also using two DPDT on/on/on switches instead of one bigger switch.

Am I right in thinking that I would wire up the neck switch like the bridge one is here, and wire the bridge like the neck one is wired here? It would be single coil in the middle, right?
