in regards to that cherry L1K I'm checking out, what body wood would this wood chuck chuck? If I could chuck wood that is. Experts?
Nice score. I never see anything but crap in my local pawnshops.
As far as the wood goes, it's not mahogany (it would be red), so it could be ash or maple. You'd have to pull the neck and look at the woodgrain in the pocket to know.
As I recall the '81's, both the green & red transparent finishes were over ash bodies. Mine was (still is) clear over ash. I'm not sure I've seen an L1K made of maple. ...my experience only.
I believe it's time to purchase an L2000. I'm a p-bass dude, and I have two sb-2s, which i love; but from all the raving i hear about the L2000...What do y'all think? L2000 or LB-100?

Not to bring up old opinions, but I actually get a lot of positive comments about the headstock shape. People are like, 'that's a really awesome Fend....wait, ***! What's G&L?" Even the guitar players in the band love my sb-2 headstock!
my 83 L2000 with the flat/wide neck is the best sounding bass i have ever had, it's crazy how good it sounds with my mesa d180 and the orange 115s, full, rich, deep, even, and super easy to play even with medium action
the 2011 sb-2 is no slouch either, however i bet it will be amazing in 2041 when it gets time to mellow out a little

I have your L1K's L2K cousin. The slim neck is just incredible, even for a novice fretlesser like myself.
I have a '81 black L1000 made of soft mapple. (body wood can be determined after a closed inspection of the neck pocket).
She isn't too heavy and sounds thunderous!
I also owned a '83 black soft maple El Toro which was noticeably heavier.
Under the solid color you can find a western soft mapple, a swamp ash, or a poplar body. In 1981, that was the three options for a G&L with a white wood body.
My L1K is one of the best basses I have played. I love the sound and the wide, flat neck (ebony at that).
I almost have the same bass... with 2 pickups!
I moded mine to a full passive config. As a result, i have an L1000 electronic on each pickup!
What a great instrument!
And I confirm, these lawsuit ebony necks are a dream to play.
I'd go for the LB-100. I had an L2K and while it does a decent P-Bass clone, it's not like the real thing.
I didn't modify one, but I had an L2000 neck with the pointy scroll cut off. It looked FAR worse. But personally, I LOVE the little scroll. It's unique and adds some character.
My LB-100 is due in about 3 weeks tops according to G&L. It's been 7 weeks since I placed the order but I guess they're a little behind schedule with getting bodies painted. But I tell ya, I've been watching their FB page every day to see if they post a picture of the body when it's done at least. I am hoping that I see it when it's done. It's a less common color scheme so I'd think they'd want to show it off

I just managed to pay off my new M2500, and man is this thing sweet! I know no one officially believes you without pictures, so I'll have to figure out how to do that....
