G&L Club Part 7

My new custom strap arrived yesterday. Today will be its church debut.

Yes. A totally custom shape — a soap bar that has a reverse mfd split coil inside. TheG&L custom shop won't do it.

How do I reach Ken Baker?
Ken isn't going to do anything that directly conflicts with his obligations to BBE (G&L)

Just a thought , get a set of the SB-2 split coils, used or directly from the G&L store. Remove the shells (they slide off fairly easily) and get a soapbar pickup cover of an appropriate size / form factor from fleabay or the like. Preferably a "sealed" style think EMG/BART . Put the coils inside, drill access holes for the pole pieces if you so desire, a weak adhesive would hold the coils in place. If brave enough one could cast them in epoxy.

That's a nice strap, matches the bass really well. Who made it?

A lady local in my hometown, her name is Lindi. She does leatherwork as a sideline. Her company is Pawnee Rose. Since it is a sideline, turnaround time is slow. I ordered mine in February.

Here is her Facebook account:
Pawnee Rose Leather Co.

Interesting idea. I will try it at home to see if it will fit. I have a broken one in my drawer. One question: this would not be for a bass with regular string spacing. Will the pole pieces being out of alignment be a big deal for sound? I know they're not on the Bill Lawrence P pickup.

I'm going to have to check my L2500 w/K-mod when I get home tonight. I thought single coil mode was the outer coils, but now I'm not sure.

I'm assuming that the "tap the pole pieces with a screwdriver" test should answer that question?

Yep tap tap :) or any ferromagnetic object , a keyring, nickle etc

Yup, that's the approved method!

If you do it yourself you can wire it any way you want: outer, inner, both top coils, both bottom coils. I don't know if there's a G&L factory standard for it on an option order.

Purty! So what coils did the factory K-mod isolate? :bookworm:
Finally had some free time to play today. Got to try out the One Control Blackberry that arrived a few days ago and .... test out my K-mod. :D

Outer coils.

Do you mean something other than the ones they sell in their store?
Ha! Of course I had to follow your link. And of course had to poke around the various corners of the online store, including Clearance Instruments. When it occurred to me, in honor of CLF, that section ought to be Clarence Instruments. :D

Yes. I'll just spell it out. 4.25" x 1.5" (+/-) for a narrow spaced 8-string touch instrument. I want the magnets and wiring of the split coil, but in a reverse split or in-line layout, with the split at the middle between the 4th and 5th string.

It is still not clear to me what value pole pieces add to a ceramic bar magnet in the case of this specific pickup.

G&L won't do custom shapes or really much custom anything beyond what's on the menu.
Last I checked, Nordstrand will do custom shapes but only on pickups they already make.

I like the idea of trying to just shove a regular MFD split coil into a properly sized plastic casing and see what happens. I think I'll try that first.
