Frankly, I've always felt 12 tones were a few too many.
for the price you could have a luthier remove them, or be like jaco and do it your selfIve been hoping for a fretless Trib L-2000 for years now. No such luck.
Maybe G&L should just sell fretless Tribute necks in the online store... drop in to the bass of your choice.

Years ago I bought a Squier 5-string jazz. I didn't care for the pickups, so I installed an EMG 5-string jazz set. It sounded great, but later I decided (rightfully so) that I wasn't very good with a 5-string. I stuck the 5-string jazz in a closet for about a year, then thought maybe it'd make a good fretless. I had the frets removed by my luthier, and I was right, it makes a good fretless. EXCEPT, those EMG pickups are just too big for that perfect fretless sound. You know, that Jaco sound. I don't use a fretless much, just for special applications in the studio, but I'm seriously thinking of going back to the original pickups and pots, which I still have. Anyway, I believe a Kiloton (or any MFD equipped bass) would just have too big a sound for a fretless. But that's just me.
I can understand why you think that way.
I own an L2000 fretless, epoxied board. It's true that in series, that sound is so thick, it takes away a certain amount of the typical fretless sound we are used to. But it is great when you need to punch through, even with a fretless. I've also found that the single coil mod makes an L2000 pretty cool for fretless. Again, it is a little thicker than what we are used to...but still in that sweet spot of sound. Better than series. Plus it sounds original. Not exactly like a fretless J or Stingray. I like that. But I'm not chasing other people's tone. I would rather have my own.
Plus, I've found that the active modes are really cool when soloing. Ideally, in a band when I solo (fretless or otherwise), it is cool if the rest of the band backs off...this isn't always the case. So being able to boost the signal for solos is cool, which an L2000 can do, at the flip of a switch. And I tend to solo when I am using the fretless, because that's usually for more instrumental stuff.
So there are pluses and minuses to all this stuff. Personally, I use my fretless L2000 a lot, my fretless J sits in it's case. But to each his own.
That would make far too much sense for G&L since you can't buy replacement necks at all without returning the old one.
I forgot to ask - is this an SB-1, or SB-2, or SB-2T?
I wonder if the licensed Warmoth necks fit the G&L neck socket

Put it to you this way:
I bought a Custom Shop Kiloton. The body wasn't to spec but the neck was. When G&L sent the new body, it didn't fit the neck.
So G&L necks don't even fit G&Ls.
That neck looks amazing. I was considering ordering one almost identical to that from Warmoth. (For a Fender, not a G&L).
Other than the JB, the G&L necks are longer (one more fret) and slightly narrower than a Fender pocket. Plus the heels are more squared off.
I don't know if the Fender spec would fit a JB.
That neck looks phenomenal. A friend has a roasted maple Warmoth neck on a parts bass, and it's the nicest neck I've ever felt. Better than my G&Ls and Warwicks... even my roasted maple Stingray.
call them they are super friendly, maybe a stingray warmoth neck. i think they have a same # frets ? B T W that neck looks awesome. Always wanted a rose wood neck, and fretboard like the special run stingrays
They won't send you a neck, period. I can't speak for Tributes, but with a Fullerton G&L, you have to send them the entire bass. I did that with a pawn shop 2007 SB-2 I bought with a bad neck and bottomed out truss rod. You can spec out the neck you want, then they build it specifically for that bass, do a complete setup, and ship it back. It's a slow process, but the new on my SB-2 is oh so fine. At one time I saw that they had some Tribute necks at the online store under the category "clearance necks." Getting one you wanted was hit or miss, and I haven't seen that category at the store in a while now.
