I'd agree completely with the inner coils choice—and that's what's implemented in my L-2500. The result, with both single coil pickups engaged, is very rewarding with a unique character that's quite different from the J-bass effect that folks seek with the outer coil selection.

I've heard this same argument with H and HH versions of MusicMan basses, the idea being tied to the large pole pieces in both the MM and G&L instruments.

I did the experiment by listening to the neck pickup on my L-2500 as I cranked the bridge pickup up/down. Until I got the bridge pickup so high that I got the tone wobble (characteristic of magnetic interference) when playing the top-most fret, I couldn't hear any influence of bridge pickup height on the sound of the soloed neck pickup.

It is not just the magnetic pull, it's also the additional wiring (and capacitance)
No it can't be heard in the mix

This is also an ascertion as to why a PJ does not sound like a P.

Yep tap tap :) or any ferromagnetic object , a keyring, nickle etc

Subtle changes, but the bass is so great as it is that I don't want to change too much.

Yup, that's the approved method!:thumbsup:

If you do it yourself you can wire it any way you want: outer, inner, both top coils, both bottom coils. I don't know if there's a G&L factory standard for it on an option order.

Mine was factory installed, but the original owner had it done after buying it.

He had a neck issue so he sent it back to G&L for a new neck. Then, while it was there, he had them replace the original rosewood with a markerless maple neck with matching headstock (wise decisions ;)). Since G&L already had the bass, he also had them add the K-mod. I don't know if he requested a specific set of coils or if they did what they did because that's just how they did it.


It's no Sparkle, but it IS pretty. ;)

EDIT: I need to take a new picture. I replaced the black knobs with chromes after this picture was taken.

my SB1 is Okoume but it has MFD pickups. My G&L Jazz is Empress. i think tone wood is a myth. Having owned an American Original 60s Jazz (and now a 70s) I could not tell a single sound difference from the Alder/RW Fender to the Empress/RW or the G&L Jazz. The only tone difference is the AO 70s bridge pickup being back closer to the bridge. That makes a tone difference.

My G&L Jazz in empress/RW sounds awesome. I dont think you can go wrong with a G&L bass regardless of wood

I'm pretty excited. It's only going to be a super-subjective impression, though, since it will be two months since I played it last. The mods are reversible, but I won't reverse them unless something really doesn't feel/sound right. So I may not have an articulate A/B comparison.

But who knows. I have many, many hours on that bass, so maybe I will notice subtle differences.
