G&L Club Part 7

I happen to own both an SB-2 and a Kiloton. Both are monsters, but if I had to have just one, it'd be the K'ton. The versatility of playing that MFD 'bucker in series, parallel, or single coil trumps what the SB-2 can do, at least for me. I'm just glad I only have to choose between the two one gig at a time. Plus, if you're looking at the Trib Irish Ale K'ton, I really love that color!
i want one, sold my kilo 5, i prefer to play rock on a 4 string, 5 for pop and country

I have a Tribute JB-2 which I bought as a B-stock to use for some experiments--wiring, strings, etc--as well as play. I recently purchased a used EMG 2-band active EQ to install in it. This has separate bass/treble pots, so I'll have a master volume on this bass. I actually prefer a bass with a master volume, but I'd like to wire in a series/parallel switch for the pickups. Can anybody direct me to a wiring diagram for this?

I found one, thanks to TBD1138. Thank you. The human race has returned to its usual disorder now.

I'm wondering about a couple of things, just pure idle curiosity:

* Has anyone tried reversing the split pickup on their SB-1 or SB-2?

* Has anyone replaced the stock pickup in an LB-100 with a Di Marzio?

In either case, I'd be all ears.
ive been wanting an SB 2 jazz body p neck with pickups in same position as my spector euro 4, kina allice in chains vibe, its not just reversed p its also back, like they left the bottom coil alone and leap frogged the top coil, E side, plus i think the bridge is in 70's jazz territory, either way i want one, an angry mans bass to play tuned D#. i got the spector for this, and it is too uncomfortable to play in first position, and its for sale. when its gone I'm going back to my dealer and ordering another custom shop, if you build it they will come!

Are you going to swap the two halves' places, so that overall the pickup is occupying the same area? Or are you going to keep the E+A half in place, and shift the D+G half to its neck side?
I'm just going to swap positions.

I'm also having him drop in some 500k pots (the usual pots are 250k). I favor flats, so the idea is to squeeze a little more high end out of the pickups.

Subtle changes, but the bass is so great as it is that I don't want to change too much.

Sorry for what is probably a question with an obvious answer, but I genuinely don't know.
Is the neck pickup on the L2000/L2500 in the same place as the pickup on the L1000? If so, are the L2000/L2500 able to replicate the L1000 tone?

Not an obvious answer. Yes, it is possible—partially, sort of.

• If you run the L2000 in passive mode using the neck pickup, you can get the parallel setting on the L1000. This should be a very close match, including the availability of the passive bass and treble roll-off controls.

• However, to get the single coil mode of the L1000, you'd need to have the K-mod done on the L2000 and the correct coil set selected for that modification: inner coils as I have on mine. That way, you can get the bridge-side coil only when you select the neck pickup.

• The L1000 mode which cannot be reproduced on an L2000 is the OMG setting, a series mode connection with some of the treble from the neck-side coil bled away through a capacitor.

I'm pretty sure the answer on the pickup position is yes. As for the tone, it depends partly on what generation of each you're comparing. The early L-1000 featured parallel, single coil, and the so-called (on TB) OMG mode. It was purely passive. L-2000 experts can weigh in, but at least the ones I owned shared only the parallel passive position with the L-1000. There have been other generations of wiring schemes and many mods available that might share other modes in common.

You asked about "tone", not wiring. IMO, with both passive and in parallel mode, yes, they should sound about the same, at least to the extent any 2 basses do. I no longer own a 2000-series bass, so I can't test my theory. But I'm willing to bet plenty of club members here have both - and of course TB'ers love to test things :).

^^^ ...an even better answer!

Older ('80s and '90s) L-2000s did include the OMG mode instead of the current series mode. So those are very similar to the L-1000, just without the single coil mode.

I was a very early G&L buyer, like the end of 1980. Both 1000's and 2000's were available. To me, the simplicity with versatility of the 1000 just won out (plus back in '80 a lot of us weren't yet sold on putting batteries in our basses). ...which is partly why I couldn't do Music Man, which was all the rage at the time (not to mention that it was another $250 :))

I strongly advise going for the inner coils when doing a K-mod, at least for the neck PU. The single coil mode produces a wonderfully clean yet organic sound that I really like, less "tubey" than a typical neck sound.

Some say that a neck L-2000 PU cannot sound exactly like a L-1000 because of the bridge pickup magnetic field pulling on the strings. While this is correct in theory I wonder if the effect can actually be heard...
