The dark reddish-brown area sure looks like mahogany to me.
Can't tell by the pic, is that bass CAR? Are you sure it's a refin?
No, it's not CAr and it is a refin as per the seller's description. And he says it's not a pro job. So, at the same price as my all-original tobacco burst Hog Wunkay, I am in no big hurry getting it. I still may, but I need to arrange to go see it first. And this can wait.

Ed Friedland mentioned on social media recently that G&L has something new on the horizon, and that he thinks people will really like it-- If I remember correctly it was in regards to adding an additional string to something... so, I'd say keep an eye out, and don't give up hope. With Summer NAMM just around the corner, who knows what we'll see
Looking at their current lineup, what models are missing a 5-sting?
- ASAT. Sonically, this is pretty near the L2500, so I think it's less likely to see a bonus string.
- The 4-bolt JB. Intentionally built with traditional folks in mind, though because of the other JB models, I would say there is a slight chance this would get a 5th string. Should it receive the 5th, the next question they would hear is "when do we get a Tribute model?" And that would be starting from scratch.
- SB1&2. Both have been around a long time and are quite popular, so I'd say these have a good chance, though adding an additional string might be counter to the spirit of the model; being "more sleek and balanced." However, the SB might be easier to branch out into the Tribute line...
- LB100. Reintroduced in 2013, appears to be pretty popular and just as likely to get the 5th as the SB, and equally as difficult to go Tribute as the 4-bolt JB.
These are just my thoughts, but I'd say the SB, or LB would be the more likely candidates. Letting the imagination run, it would be fun to see G&L re-introduce a new El Torro 5-stringer

Yeah you should go see it in person just to make sure. Long shot probably, but....
....looking at that pic you posted, I keep wondering if that bass isn't an original CAR, and that maybe the owner doesn't realize it, just like he doesn't know alder from mahogany. Under the red, it looks like "silver", which would be a common undercoat for CAR. I think my '81 CAR L1000 has silver as the metallic undercoat. Those white coats under the red and silver could be primer coats, which is also common on CAR.
Also, in 1981 G&L had major issues with CAR. Some looked good, others were finished so badly it's hard to believe they let them out of the factory like they did. I'm talking about vast "dry" areas, horrid orange peel, and blotchy areas of inconsistent color. Unbelievable, actually. An original "bad" CAR could (and they have been) easily be mistaken for a poor rattle can refin.
OTOH, it could just be exactly what the seller says. Neither would surprise me. Good luck.
Or maybe the extra string means G&L will do a 6 string bass. Now that, ladies and gents, would be something new. And I would be purchasing one of those, without a doubt.

G&L guys, i just came into possession of this L-1505 today on a trade. This is one hot pickup! The pots are a little scratchy and the hardware has some slight oxidation going on but other than that it's pretty nice! There is a small chip on the nut by the A string, but it has no effect on intonation. The controls are a little confusing, I'm new to this model. Any advice on how to tame the high end? Does anyone know the best way to find the date it was built without taking it apart? I'm curious what they are really worth, as i basically stole it. Unbelievable trade.. And of course the pic...

Looks like a really nice one, 'grats. I thought mine sounded fantastic, great B string.
The serial number can give you an idea, with an uncertainty up to a couple of years.
First L-1505s started in 1997.
Is it CL+6 digits or CLF+5 digits?
The 3-2 headstock started in 1998.
Six-bolts with no neckplate ?
Preamp version number ?
Otherwise, there is no harm opening the neck pocket.
Cool ,thanks! It's CLF and 5 digits, and 6 bolt no neckplate. I haven't opened the control cavity yet.
CLFxxxxx are post-1998. Need to know the xxxxx to be more accurate
OK, it's CLF12855. Preamp says Rev 1.1.
How the heck did you find that out? i tried using that search with some small parameters and got nothing each time. I'm really curious how you did that!
