(You'll gather from this question that my knowledge of how a humucker is actually physically constituted is as yet unborn...)

On a theoretical level, would it be possible to take an L-2000 pickup, divide it into two halves and then fit them into a pair of soapbar shells? (Or take two L-2000 pickups and remove a coil)

If my Yamaha TRBX had been able to sound anything like the inner coils of a L-2000 I would still have it.

Electrically, I would say yes, since they can be run in series or parallel, and the leads for both coils are connected to external wires.

magnetically (if I remember right) there is a bar magnet for each coil, so should be possible.

physically, I dunno.

Excellent. So get two soapbar shells, drill some holes in the top, cut the bass plate in two and there's the cure for an anemic bass's pair of polite humbuckers (being sure to give the bass a parallel/series switch)

I would get one exactly the same, except perhaps a white pickup cover…

I'm not sure they offer a white pickup cover for an MFD 'bucker. I wanted one for my Kiloton 4 when I switched the pickguard to an aged pearl, but G&L didn't show one in the store. I sent an email inquiry to memo Romero at G&L about that and never got a reply. Of course, spray paint is available at any hardware store.

I sent an email inquiry to memo Romero at G&L about that and never got a reply. Of course, spray paint is available at any hardware store.

The only reason I have white pickup covers on LB-100 is that I requested them with the Fralin pickup that's in it.

I've seen it on the 4-string, but I'm having a hard time finding it…though I have found one Custom Shop example sans pick guard…actually very reminiscent of a Joe Dart Bass

RMC should be a standard option (not CS only) on the SB/Kiloton basses.

They may be out in the store, you might check with a G&L dealer.

Keep in mind you can ruin an MFD soapbar by changing the cover, they use an unusual potting agent that's like glue and the coils are often stuck to the cover. I've had strands of the copper coil wire stay glued into the cover when I've removed them on occasion, it's luck of the draw whether it will be an easy swap or not.

Mine came from a limited run helped along by @RocketMusic and has rear-mounted controls (RMC), in my case on a tobacco sunburst front. It's a pretty rig. The custom shop can surely do this, given $ufficient motivation.

They came with RMC from around the late '80s to the early '90s when they were initially discontinued.
They did a batch of reissues around '08 for the BABP forum.
