With respect, have to disagree. The Ed Friedland mashup demonstrates that the M2500 is very much an MFD bass and that's absolutely my experience.



It's a more contemporary take, but underwinding the MFDs slightly doesn't remove their characteristic flavour. Nothing but nothing milk toast about my M2500.

1000% agree. If I want more "snarl" from my M2500 I just boost the upper mids on my amp. But the mid cut slap tone on the M2500 seems to be it's own thing, at least to my ears it's got that ultra modern hi-fi glassy tone that cuts like crazy. Love it.

Longtime L player here, and I have had an M. The M was pleasant, had some of the hints of the L, but just didn't have enough to really stand out. At the same time, the M had hints of "generic 3-band active humbucker bass" that just was, well, generic sounding. Not bad, but just didn't seem to have enough character to be really distinguishable to me. But I wouldn't mind having another one.

Same. I didn't think the L and M sounded anything alike. M is very laid back. L is much more aggressive to me. Nothing wrong with it, but not what I expected.

That's exactly my takeaway. Which was why I passed on the idea of a custom spec'd USA M bass. I already have that sound in spades, elsewhere.

This was my impression of the MJ. A nice bass, but nothing that distinguished it from all the other active J basses. Now drop a couple of single coil MFDs in one and see what we get.

I don't know if that's exactly it...Maybe. Or maybe M is for Middle-of-the-Road. My M2000 just never had the punch that my L-series basses had. But it did have a good middle-of-the-road sound that might've been great in a studio on a pop or country recording. It would give the producer and the engineer a nice smooth sound with a lot of room for them to work with. My M2000 is perhaps the most beautiful bass I've ever owned, but I sold it after only about a month of buying it. I expected it to be something of a new-and-improved L2000, but instead it was a smooth jazz bass. I wish I'd spent more time with it finding out all its secrets.

As a big short-scale fan, I fell in love with an off-the-shelf Fallout. When I saw this double-pickup version show up, I had to jump on it:

Right now I'm working on assembling components for a partscaster based around an SB-2 body and pickups. The plan is to have someone make a short-scale conversion neck, which I'm sure will cost a chunk of change but it will be a lot cheaper than another Custom Shop instrument.

It's a Custom Shop bass, ordered from G&L by the dealer (along with a second 2-pickup Fallout). I've also seen a third 2-pickup custom example, with the pickups further apart and rear-mounted controls.

Curious to hear your thoughts about that neck pickup. Neck pickups on SS basses can tend to be tubby or woofy by default of placement and short scale, so I'm curious how an MFD would add to or change that. Especially since there's no bass roll-off like you'd have on a L-1000/L-2000.

The difference in sound between the two pickups isn't that big - but then they're spaced pretty close together. However, the big benefit of the neck pickup, in my opinion, is apparent when it's combined with the bridge pickup (or middle, or whatever you want to call it). There's some frequency cancellation going on that takes out the woofy lows and leaves a fairly clean and clear sound, which I find more interesting than either pickup on its own.

It would definitely be interesting to hear a three-pickup Fallout with a 5-way switch. But for now that's just in my dreams.

They do sell the pickups on the online store and you can get a router at any good home improvement store…

In typical Talkbass fashion I will not be surprised if there is already a discussion on this, but a Talkbass search yielded pages of gig reports but nothing about a bass.

Anyone know the skinny?
