This showed up on Kijiji. Described as an L-5000, I'll confess to never having seen one. Here's part of the ad:

"Extremely RARE 1989 G&L L-5000 5 String Bass guitar in original case with literature. This bass is one of 400 total ever produced by Leo Fender, and remains his FIRST and ONLY 5 string bass design. These were produced approx 100 per year from 1988 - 1992 in Fullerton USA.
Built to answer the call for a 5 string bass which was becoming popular in the day, this hit the mark!
Lightweight Alder body and a specially cut hard-rock maple neck for strength. The rosewood fingerboard is figured beautifully and the frets are as new. This bass uses the 3-Bolt neck attachment system with a Micro-Tilt function. Truss rod works as it should, and the bass is set with nice low action.
The bass has an MFD split P pickup and bites like only they can. Amazing Precision tone and growl!
Has G&L stamped Schaller lightweight tuners, and the G&L Saddle Lock bridge.
The factory pickguard is a black coated aluminum and the bridge/neck plate matches.
The bass uses approx 16mm string spacing (like Warwick) and makes for some fast passages!
Comes in the nice original case with literature."

pretty easy… just plug into an amp and turn everything on, but not too loud, and switch to the SC mode. Take a screwdriver (or something that attracts magnetically to the pickup) and lightly tap one of the poles of the pickup. It it makes noise, it's the side of the pickup being used. Repeat as desired.

Great basses. That said they were far from being a 5-string success (hence the low production numbers). String spacing is actually 15mm (at least that is what I measured on my L5000 and my NordyMute in that spec fits it great). Most find this to be too tight. I actually like it quite a bit, but string spacing has never been a deciding factor for me. I own from 15mm to 19mm and am comfortable on all of them.

The one in the sale ad is one of the earlier production (rarer) sickle headstock L5000s. Clean ones do not pop up all that often. They also tend to sell slowly, but do sell.

Here is my L5000. Built towards the end of the run and the only one I have seen and only one registered at guitarsbyleo in Lake Placid Blue. Picked it up on the forum in 2012.

Those new Tribute LB-100s with block inlays? The ones the G&L website are listing as 1¾" nut? @J-Fev kindly took a tape measure to a shop selling them.....

So, still 1⅝", alarm over

Yep, posted the measurement on mine a few pages back.
BTW, I'm very impressed with the quality of my Emerald Blue Trib. Rivals any of my USA G&L's.

I saw that bass when I was casting around for a new GL recently, and was tempted.
I really love the No pickguard look, but prefer a tobacco burst over the 3ts.
Which i ended up with.
Also really prefer the Kiloton's more basic wiring setup. The more knobs and switches i have,
the more i fiddle-faddle around…..

After having serial/parallel on a Fender Jazz Bass and it getting more output but thicker and darker I thought the same but the SB-2's MDF's are a whole other animal. I can tell you exactly what it sounds like. Turn the neck to max and the bridge volume to 75 percent. Sounds like that but a little more output, extremely quiet, and the tone is not even close to dark or too thick sounding. Just very quiet and more output. It has fabulous tone.

what do you think about kmod in the 2000/2500? Do you like more than parallel/series?
I'm testing the sc mod with a Sadowsky preamp outboard and i'm very satisfied!
Very punchy and with the Sadowsky is very full range

It is my favorite mode on my L2000. It's very clear, punchy and balanced.

I know what you are trying to say, it has incredible output. Very true! Rivals my Active Bass
I find the tone with the stock strings to clear, articulate and piano like. Love this bass

Is the pickup in the Kiloton exactly the same as in the L-1/1½/2k?

While I was listening to some Kiloton demos yesterday I came across that recent short video of Steve A playing a fretless Kiloton, and it reminded me that I had heard and admired the tone of the fretless Kiloton before. Seems a perfect match.

Something I would love to hear: an SB-1 split MFD in the Kiloton position (and if it sounded rubbish, then I could stop wondering about it)
