I have several g&l's - only one is heavy… it's an old 3bolt model. I purchased a new one from g&l with empress and sent it right back. The wood was so soft the pickups arrived popped out of the cavities

I haven't done it before. I got on Youtube and it doesn't look too hard. I would have to get the tools. Or I could pay my luthier $45 to do it, and not worry.....which is probably what I will do. I can't believe G&L let this out of the factory like this. Otherwise, I really like it.
Will G&L ever make an active/passive, 2-pickup bass with the bridge pickup in Kiloton position and neck in L1K one? That's what I wonder.
Interesting idea which G&L may see only as a duplication of the L2k. IME the pickup placement of the Kiloton is a "sweet spot" for a mid forward single pickup bass. It's the second bass I've owned that used this position. The first was a Modulus M92-5 that was actually nicknamed the "Sweet Spot" due to that pickup location. However it was an 18v active model. Both basses cut through a mix very well using this approach.
If G&L hadn't discontinued the L-1500, I was going to order one, and modify to be just like that.
Honestly they could just make an option on the l-2000 that moves the bridge pickup forward.

The neck pickup should be right up against the bridge pickup.
That would be sweet.
It would make the bridge pickup more useable on it's own, and the tighter pickup spacing would have less midscoop.
Saw it a few days ago. Went back and looked. You are right. Not quite. Might be why pickup placement in general looks off to me on it.
On that note,
It would be interesting if they did a Tookay with the "original/prototype" pickup spacing, which was similar to that of the MM Sabre bass.
Pickup spacing options would be cool.
Standard, bridge in Kilo spot, and prototype/Sabre spots.
I had a 1500 for a couple of years, and I actually got a quote to have it routed by a luthier. Never followed through with it, though, but always wish I had.
Haha....they can't seem to get what they do now right 100% of the time. That kind of variation might really end up a mess breaux. I can see it now. Posts saying I ordered it with the Kilo spacing option and got _________________. Not that it wouldn't be nice. I suppose a CS order might get it done though.

Which is why I'd much rather buy some MFDs, and have them installed in another bass, than go through the headache of dealing with G&L.
I saw this today at the GC in Cherry Hill, NJ. I didn't plug it in, but the neck seemed straight and solid and felt great. It's strung with flats. Love the body-matching headstock.
Owned one exactly like that one.
