G&L Club Part 7

The hook started in '83 and remained pointy on most of the 4s (except SBs) until 2012ish. They dulled the hook on all the US 4 strings after that. Fivers with 4+1 headstocks like the Kilo 5, L5000, L5500 and first year L2500 are pointy too. The 2500 changed to 3+2 shortly after release.

All the Trib 4s look like they are still pointy.

The USA JB still has the full point.

Perfect examples of the extremes in the fishhooks. I can live with the one on the left (LB-100), but every time I see the one on the 5-stringer, I flinch -- worried that it could somebody's eye out.

Is there any pattern there? Like, certain years had/have one and other years have the others? Or certain models? Or some other pattern?

Someday, I'm gonna have another G&L, and it would be helpful to know which to gravitate towards.

The more pronounced hooks can serve as useful tools for keeping singers/guitarists/audience members in line. Just sayin

I picked up my JB for the first time in ages the other day, and was just kinda 'meh' about the sound of it. I'm sure I'll get over it, it's a fine bass, but I'm just really into the L2K right now.

I played a Jazz exclusively for 13 years, then in 2017 I started trying other basses. Eventually I ended up trying an L2K and the ordered a custom shop L-2500.

That's now my main player and my 2010 CIJ 75 Jazz reissue in Lake Placid Blue, which is one of the nicest jazz basses I've ever seen is currently up for sale.

So yeah, it happened to me.

Yes, something similar happened to me. I actually ended up dropping an MFD split coil into my Tribute LB-100. The stock alnico pickup was great, but it was no MFD. MFD pickups are magical. The "M" in MFD stands for "magical," right? No? Are you sure??

Different tones for different situations IMO. Both have their places for me. For the heavier/rock stuff the L2500 is hard to beat. For funkier and jazzier stuff my JB5s are great.

No Fenders left in the house. Still have 2 stingrays though.

I definitely prefer my MFD equipped basses (L2500, L5000, Kilo 5, Fallout), but one of the great things about a Jazz bass is that you have options to change the sound if you do not like what you have. There is an insane variety of pickup/drop-in preamps that fit the JB.

I went through several pickup sets on my JB5, but landed with JBE Pickups and East J-Tone preamp. Over several Jazz basses, I have tried something like 10 different pickup sets. The range of tones available is really all over the place. Personal favorites have been the JBE JB5, Nordstrand Big J Blades (warm and wooly wind), and Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Jazz.

Man, G&L just excels at metal flake finishes and Blackbursts.

Amazing, after having owned 6 G&L basses, I too am left with only an L-2500 (US) and a JB5, together with a couple of Sire. No more Fender or Squier now.

My last season's Tribute LB100 with a small point. A beast at 10 lb. 12 oz. Dropped a Wilde P46 in it and am very pleased with the difference. Wanted the current tort pickguard, but the black on the ash has grown on me. You really can't see it in my avatar, but the 1970 Precision in the picture was wearing one of Bill Lawrence's early P90 pickups. Glad his work is still available.

Okay...let me correct it was an L90 pickup in my old Precision. After adding the new pickup to the LB100, I must have had "P" on the brain...

I'm a huge tort fan (all of my current basses that have pickguards are wearing tort), but there is NOTHING wrong with the black pickguard on that bass.

That's a nicely done burst, too. I like that there's a lot of yellow/transparent in the center so you can see more of the grain in the wood.

Just talked to Memo,technician at G&L and he told me the serial number on my L2000,just received today is dated 1984. Seller said it was 1986,no problem. Nice condition to be 38plus years old. And with the original tolex case. Noticed the rectangular sticker on back of head stock was missing?

Very nice!

Are you referring to the serial number plate that G&L was doing for a few years? Those didn't exist until a few years ago, and I think they quit not long after they started.

There should not be a sticker on back of headstock. Your serial is in your neck plate so no need for a serial plaque.
