No binding, 8.8lbs. There's a tiny space at the neck pocket detailed in G&L's ad, cosmetic only. It has a 1 3/4" nut and my old palm now prefers slimmer. With other G&L fretless basses in the harem she'll get less play tho I'm now somewhat over-bassed :roflmao:. I console myself with the thought that at my age many widows have almost as much invested in plastic surgery but I can flip what's not working.

I'm curious to hear others thoughts: Kiloton or ASAT?

I own an option order ASAT, and while I think it sounds great and looks fantastic. I find that I don't really gravitate towards it as much as my other basses. The biggest reasons for this are the neck dive, it feels like I have to reach further for the lower notes, and the non-contoured body can all get uncomfortable after a while.

I've always been interested in a kiloton as an alternative but just couldn't justify it. I'm wondering if it'd be worth looking into selling the ASAT and grabbing a kiloton.

Love the blocks with that dark body. Ergonomics is why I've sold so many ASAT's yet always end up with another. Now that I'm rarely gigging and at home playing sitting down the reach is the same as other G&L's. The passive Kilo doesn't do anywhere near what the double humbuckers with PTB preamp will. Since ergonomics are the only reason you want to switch it makes sense to get an L-2000. No more dive no more long reach.

Years ago a TBer called ASATMAN made these for the older 3-bolts; looked weird worked well:

No idea about a Kiloton, but that is a nice looking ASAT. Can't get block inlays anymore unless you go custom shop, either

Their website has not yet caught up with the 2023 price list. For the normal USA builds (what they call "Build To Order"), they did away with most of the neck options. Or should I say, they made most of the neck options the exclusive domain of the Custom Shop. So things like neck radius changes, nut width changes, graphite nut, vintage frets, blocks and neck binding are all Custom Shop things now.

For me, the Kiloton over the Asat. I prefer the smaller, very contoured body, the single pickup,
and the passive harness.
But, as someone else mentioned, you wouldn't be giving up all the pickup options with the L2k.
And it's a well balanced and contoured body compared to an Asat.
I think the L1k body is the same as the L2k's?
My wunkay is a very comfortable bass to play standing or sitting.

Gotcha. My last 2 orders were a non-blocked build to order and an unlined fretless so I hadn't run into this change.

Unfortunately, everyone has increased their pricing pretty drastically over the last few years. Many with 2 or even 3 price hikes. Way of the world at this point.

Glad I am now aware of a Matador V though. Been trying to decide on my next 5 string P-bass so this definitely adds a great option. Do you know if they are doing their own 5 string P pickup again or if they are using someone else?

Yep, they generally wind their own pickups. There are a few exceptions with humbuckers on some of the guitar models, but all the bass pickups are wound in house.

The Matador and Matador V are only available through the Custom Shop, so once you're in that league because of the base model then all of the neck options would once again be available.

Now that you mention that, though, they've never made a 5-string P pickup before... I better check with them about this before I so confidently state that they are making it.

Ron @ G&L says they do indeed wind the pickups themselves, and you can choose either Alnico (LB-100) or MFD (SB-1) style pickups. If you go with the Alnico pickups, he says the bridge pickup is wound a little hotter than normal. If you go with MFD pickups, the neck and bridge pickups are wound the same.

NOTE: ERROR! They do not wind their own 5-string pickups for the Matador V. They'll be uysing Duncan Quarter Pounders for now.

Pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but is there anyone at G&L who can answer questions about the clearance instruments? I've been calling the main number, 2 and then 2 for the store, and nothing but "mailbox full." Total waste of time? Or keep trying? I have spoken to Memo in service before and he's great. Think he might be able to help? If I buy a bass from them directly, are there any returns or is it "all sales final" kinda thing?
