G&L Club Part 7

Curious, what effects, if any, do you guys typically use? My drummer likes a dry sound, but I prefer some chorus on my bass. I'll use a dry sound for a few songs, but generally, chorus and compression are in use. I just like my bass to have "my" sound.

Edit: We're a cover band, not a tribute band. We're not trying to exactly reproduce a particular band's sound.

Nothing really, just preamp coloring.
I use a GK Plex and have five amp voice choices. I use the hybrid tube voice most and the MB500 voice some, and almost always boost bass, unless I'm playing my Rob Allen, which really doesn't need anything.

The SCR-DI is a great pedal. It is what I use most.

I really like its simplicity, and it sounds great.

I was a Stingray (sometimes Spector) player for almost 10 years. A Stingray suited almost everything I've played...but I felt the need for a second humbucker. Never liked the spacing of the Ray HH models so I finally took the chance. It has "no top dots" and "matching headstock" as custom options. Price was good as well.

Took it right away with me to record today...sounds and plays killer! Only thing that still makes it hard to love is the headstock....but I'll get over it. My favourite setting so far: both Pu's in parallel mode passive oder active without boost. Reminds me a tiny bit of the 79 Sabre a had years ago.

Mayby someone can help me out with this: having an active/passice option on this bass...if the batterie dies, can you still play the bass passive (true bypass)?

And an additional question. What do you have to pay for a used mint Fullerton L2K (like mine) in the US? In GER there is a big range from 1K to almost 2K (Euros)....I don't get it!

The only question you've asked that I can answer is the passive mode. Yes, if the battery dies, you can switch it into passive and keep right on going. In fact, you can remove the battery altogether and play it in passive mode all the time should you so choose. I personally don't so choose, but others do.

And I like the 3 + 2 headstock. Access seems easier to me, and since it shortens the neck slightly, it can help reduce neck dive. It just makes sense. Why have such a long head with only one tuner on the bottom side? As Spock would say, it is illogical. But that's all just my opinion. I suggest you play on it a while and see what you end up thinking.

Nice upgrades on that one. I really like the matching headstock, which is pretty rare on bursted basses. Looks like it also has the gloss vintage tint option on the neck, too? Love that option, feels great. It's hard to tell by pics if the finish is 2-tone Burst, or Tobacco Burst. What does the build sheet say?

You got one from the brief era when they used Hipshot tuners. Don't worry, if anyone asks, those tuners are original to the bass. Supposedly, they ran out of G&L-badged tuners for a period.

use mine w/o battery all the time.

I had a 3+2 for a while. Bought the 4+1 as soon as the CLF was available. Couldn't stand the 2 tuners not at the same angle.

here we go...you are on the right track. Vintage tint + tobacco B. Hip Shots also mantioned in the document that was added to the case.

For G&L, depends on the year and the 5 string bass.

Early L5000 "Sickle": 4 + 1, but not normal G&L shape
Later L5000: 4 + 1 (similar to current 4 + 1)
L5500 and Early G&L L2500: 4+1 (not like the current 4+1, larger/pointier)
M2500, MJ5, L1005, Asat B5, L1505 and most L2500: 3 + 2
JB5 and Kiloton 5: 4 + 1
CLF L2500/L1000 Series 750: 4+1 no eye gouger

I expect there may have been some random exceptions along the way due to custom orders/G&L random variation. For the most part the above is correct.

Congrats! Very nice looking G&L. Now that you have one, you can begin looking fro number two. Another with flats is always a good plan. As for active/passive. I virtually never use active. Love the passive sound.

Yes, G&L' s like many other pets get lonely, and thrive when they have a companion. They are after all herd animals by nature.

One of the few descriptive times when you could say "heard" instead.
Headstock opinion…always hated the MM 3+1 design on the 4 strings. The 3+2 looks okay for the 5-ers.
I love the GL curlicue headstocks myself, (sort of a Fender Tele shape), and the pointy-er, the better!

Me too, I love the look. It's elegant and unique. Don't understand people who buy one and then gripe about the headstock... if you feel that way buy a Fender with the crappy flimsy bridge and shut up.

It's perfectly fine to appreciate G&L's place in history, the quality of their instruments when well done (particularly pre-BBE), while rejecting high-mass bridge snake oil and recognizing the headstock hook was not Leo's first choice and indeed only exists as a result of pressure from Fender. The company you'd reward with a purchase.
