Thanks for all the replies. I do know, based on what I hear, that the bass will cut thru the mix easily. Maybe that is where it shines.
The bass has deep lows as well. It's the highs that are not where I want them. . I'm going to spend some time with it today. I have a jam session that I will be taking it to.
Maybe some stainless strings will help with the highs?

Are you using the preamp? I find it has more highs when on and a lot more when in the on w/treble boost position. When I want more highs, I turn on the preamp and turn down the volume a bit to compensate.

For those who love MFDs and want control of the mids.
You might want to try the M series.
You can make the M series as scoopy as EMGs DCs or in your face as much as a mix can handle. It's my personal favorite at this time with G&L.

I can confirm what Tony says here. In my experience the M Series are actually G&Ls most tonally versatile bass. For the moment I've shed my others in favor of keeping my M2000 but may add an SB-2 as well.

I would be highly in favor of it. As much as I enjoyed what my Kiloton could do I also found it more limited tonally than I wanted and moved on from it in favor or keeping my M2000. I would love a Kilo with an M Series pickup and preamp along with a wider 1.675" nut width like my M2000. I would definitely be a buyer.

That is why I purchased a 2k. But this bass is over the top mid heavy. Not like my 2500.

Even though I have it for sale in the classifieds, I am going to continue to work with it. I think there is something there with this bass. I'll run it thru my live rig and eq it a bit.

Are you using it passive or active? I used my L2500 passive for years, then one day decided to start playing with it in active and even treble-boost modes. The treble boost can be shrill when soloed, but if you tame it with the treble knob and put it in a mix, it sounds great. As usual.

Also, don't be afraid to use EQ on the amp. I've gotten some great sounds from my L2500 with some EQing that I might not typically use on another bass.

Maybe go for the new Dragonskin+. Ask your local shoppe if they can order a custom lighter set?

These read like they're similar to the DDT which I'm really enjoying as my low G0 and regular G1 strings on a 34" scale bass.


For me, the Black Beauties, Red Devils, and Neons are bright enough in the ultra highs with an EQ and I can smooth the mids & high mids.

I think a good graphic EQ and quality stainless steel strings are your answer.

I've found 31 band rack units for around $50. The best pedals would be the Source Audio: Programable EQ2 and GFI Systems: Eniqma. Stereo, MIDI, extremely versatile and do more than you could imagine a "simple" equalizer box doing.

I have absolutely zero pull over there other then I get feed really well by them when I visit . I'm just an artist.

You never know what they might develop next.

Side note: For those if you who watch the Food Network, you might here the M-2500 doing it thing in some of the bumpers, even in some in some short slap parts.

Have you tried adjusting pickup height? Lowering the pickups further from the strings might even things out a bit. IIRC, this helped with an L-1500 I used to have.

I've had some issues with my L2500, especially in series mode. My Xotic BB Pre, for example, can be more distorted than I want even with the gain all the way off. I've had a few other pedals that tend to overload and distort on the loud notes. Rolling back the volume control certainly helps that, but I often have a preamp up front that can roll back the level, or I'll use a Radial AB switcher with the 2nd channel trimmed back.

I use a basic 3 pedal setup with my L2K consisting of Compressor > Overdrive > Chorus. I had to make some fine adjustments, but for me having the compressor first seems to be a good thing. Also, I backed off the volume knob on the bass just a tiny bit which also helped. Overall, my L2K and my pedals work and play very well together.
