G&L Club Part 7

Traded up my tribute 2500 for a G&L made in Japan L-2500.

I was always wondering about the necks on these. Thick like the tribute, but more comfortable where the tribute was just thick. The tribute was decent quality, but this is definitely a step up.

I had an MIJ Tribute (not branded Premium but pretty much same thing) and now have a 2011 Indonesian Tribute. I prefer the Indonesian neck because those old Japanese ones were 7.25" radius VS Indonesian 12" radius. That's for four string L2Ks, I don't know about five string models.

You do not see many of the 5 string MIJ Tributes. I have never seen one with 4+1 headstock. That one having a 4+1 headstock had to be one of the first few years of MIJ Tributes.

I think MIJ Tributes started in the mid-90s (if anyone knows actual year please share). 4+1 US made L2500 started in late 95. Most say they stopped US made 4+1 by the end of 97, but the Registry shows examples with 98 build date (it is G&L so things never start and finish cleanly). I assume the MIJ models followed a similar timeline.

Cool bass and definitely a solid trade.

Japanese made Tribute line. Best to think of it as a completely different thing than the Korean and Indonesian Tributes. MIJ line was made for Asian market (maybe even just Japan, not sure). They were never meant for North America, but you occasionally find them (sellers on Reverb and eBay will ship used ones to US).

MIJ line started before the later Tributes. (MIJ started mid 90s, Korean made started in 2003, Indonesian started in 2006/2007).

I think the MIJ manufacturer was allowed to keep making the models for a while after the Tribute line got moved to Indonesia, hence the extra name. I remember a couple of years ago someone opining that the MIJ quality wasn't too far off the MIA quality.

Hello G&L folks…Anyone looking for some 5 strings.

I signed a deal with Spector and will be putting up 8 G&Ls on here first before reverb as a curtsy.

6 of them are new US models

Just a fyi

As far as I know, only a supporting membership is required to post ads on TB.

This is a sketchy memory, but 2020 was when I first put in a G&L order. My recollection is that Flakes were an upgrade (and so were "premier" finishes - however a wood upgrade would negate having to pay the Premier finish)

Looking at these two old adverts for Flakes, on one there is both the Empress upgrade ($143) and the Flake upgrade ($215) which then had 30% knocked off to be $100 and $150

I don't know if these advert were from 2020 exactly, but they were certainly around then, as I remember those prices, and also Greg started a new website in 2021, and these were the final two flakes on the old site
