If I were not now aiming at a Sire V7 5 fretless with Xmas in the horizon, my other choice would be an ASAT bass semi-hollow fretless. Not the same budget though (hence, clearly not wife's preference), and very rare, but you have resurrected my appetite.
This one below (2010) popped up for sale a couple of times in the recent years on the TB 'For Sale' Forum ($875 shipped last time I saw it, half the price of a new one):

They are unicorn basses, I think the wife will understand if one comes along you have to get it.
For me this was one, rare in the U.K. As well and right in my colour, the only thing to top it would be one of the ASAT 5 strings.

I did have a trade off with the wife though, I am selling my Fender Cabronita and G&LS L1500 to fund it which is sensible based on play time and the sound I want.

I also have to think to myself, I am not a slap bass player (I gave it a little go), and the sounds we are going for with my guys looking at our epuipment, he is using his strat more and Les Paul less, so I don't need the very sharp bass sound to cut through the powerful LP sound.

Can any LB-100 owners comment on the body shape vs the L2000? Is upper fret access as good? And if anyone's compared the LB-100 to the SB-2, how is the LOW END on the LB-100 pickup? One of the things I like about the MFD split coil is more lows, but not as many as my L2K.
Being an owner of each, I'll try to keep things simple:
L2k & SB1 have very similar bodies, which are somewhat slimmer in the waste, and slightly smaller all around.
Compared to a Fender P, the LB-100 has more balls and feels more substantial. The SB1 has even more balls than the LB100. Using a car metaphor, the LB100 is like an old restored 1970s muscle car, while the SB1 feels more like a modern version of the classic; slimmer where it counts, and more power under the hood. Remember too, that these instruments have volume & tone knobs which can tone down the modern sounds and get squarely in the classic Fender zone.
Upper fret access... all three are about the same, and action on mine are med/low. Personally I don't play much above the 15th fret so it really a non-issue-- for me anyway.
Also, don't forget that you've got an amp that is most likely capable of adding/removing low end... not to mention a slew of pedals. If you're trying to choose one, try to get out and play some, then pick the one you're most comfortable on; each are killer instruments. Any tone discussion is completely subjective, so you will have to make your own determinations if any of them have the low end you're looking for.
Just as tone is subjective, so are my opinions LOL!

One is a Tribute, a beautiful piece of wood and one is a USA-made bass...my first.
Needless to say, I'm very excited.

$529: New L-2000 Tribute in natural. I was looking for one with a nice grain and color...hey, I know it's going to sound good, so...
$899: Used SB-2 in Metallic Silver, maple fretboard. Hard to tell in pics but two different salesmen told me it's flawless. Hardshell case, too.
