G&L Club Part 7

And here it is. G&L JB-5 Midnight Blue in Empress wood. Came in a nice case (I actually upgraded it to a Mono Vertigo for $99... HAD TOO) Also came with an electronic tuner, warwick straplocks (wow, really), and five sets of strings! Not sure of that was a "The Bass Place" thing with purchase or if it was from G&L? I'm sure you guys would know. Either way here it is.... Tuned it up and played a backing funk track.... AND

I'm a Fender American Standard five string P or J guy. Have been for the whole 2 minutes I've been playing. The two minutes before that I was a die hard Fender American Vintage 4 string P player (and I've owned Fender Custom shop and a few Deluxe's.) I DO LOVE THEM. I am fan of the 1.75 spacing and I also like the 1.81 (?) of they 5 string. The point is I've been a fan (and still am) of Fender American and think they are top notch. All that said, the Bass seems to be in a different league. It's mostly the neck and fretboard that shine. The action is a little low for me, but it so flat straight and prefect I don't want to touch it. I can really tell the difference with the PLEC and the whole neck setup. The paint, fit and finish are all brilliant, JUST LIKE all my Fender Americans have been, so very par for my eyes.

I think I'll grow into the narrow neck profile (heck I've got an Ibanez 205 and when I which over to play around on the short scale I adjust instantly. So for me, being young in my playing life, I don't think the spacing is even a consideration.)

Bottom line, for the same money as the new PRO Fender I got what feels like a PRO body with a DELUXE or hell even Fender Custom shop neck. Plus it only weights 8 lbs! (official numbers to come and I still need to test it with a strap to see how heavy the head seems, but yea the empress is light in my lap) Honestly feels like a hand crafted boutique bass to me.

Bottom line, I want an LB-100.... I'M IN THE CLUB!

Verrrrry nice! And I really like the matching headstock on it with the maple fretboard, too.

Congrats! Yes, the PLEK brings G&L basses to another level of playing comfort, I have never found a better neck than on my US M-2500 that had a fantasticly low action.
Is it a Bass Whisperer book on the stand ? ;).

I drove to seattle to specifically play this bass. I am very fussy about how a fretless bass plays.
its all there-everything is correct for a fretless bass set up wise. they dialled it in nice while I was there and I nearly went home with it. it is a three-bolt and I asked them to set it up making sure the tilt wasn't being used. they got the neck flat and action really low. nut is cut correctly too. nice birds eye in the neck
its awesome, but the exchange rate would have killed me. in amazing shape with a damn near perfect FB.
buy with confidence -this one.

TY! I agree. I've been admiring some vintage and then some Mike Lull's with that feature for a while. When I saw it as an option on this series of bases... I for sure had to have it. AND YES YES on maple. I originally ordered the "red" version with rosewood because I thought that was the only colored headstock/empress body they had at "The Bass Place." I went to the site 10 minutes after I ordered it on Ebay to look at the other items and there it was. A colored headstock, in blue this time, but with a maple board. My heart sunk! I was like, I got the right bass, wrong fretboard. So I called Dennis and he said, "Oh I can just cancel that order if want the blue one... In five minutes he switched it out for me without a fuss! Very awesome to deal with and I FOR SURE have the right bass.

NOPE... that's Ed Freidlands Bass Methond One/Two/Three Sight reading book ... but now I want the Bass Whisperer! And for those of you astute enough to notice, you'll see SBL on the computer screen. NOW GET TO WORK!

I sort of considered flying to Seattle to check it out (cheap work tickets), but thought again - I'm not in any condition to spend $1,000 on a bass right now.

it would have cost me $1400 CAN after taxes and exchange to bring her home which is kind of high. mind you, it is a fretless which are hard to come by so...I suppose its a fair price.
I know if I was interested in a bass, it is always nice to know some one with a little knowledge to try it out first.
the truth is, I still want it but just laid out cash for another fretless.

Finances aside, I'm not into the humbucker-like sound obtained from diming both pickups, and I don't imagine it would sound any better fretless (to me). That or I'm still severely turned off by the SB-2 demo video I saw, posted on YouTube by the Bass Hang.

that why I went down there; I was unsure of the volume/volume thing on the SB-2's.
the bass is very powerful and and bright; like everyone says SB's are. can be toned down to a useable level. being a fretless doesn't hamper this bass at all. there isn't a bad sound in it.
as with any PJ bass, the best sound is favoring one or the other-unless you like the scoop of both PU's.

I had one for a few years. Really a great bass, but I let it go because unfortunately I wasn't playing a lot of bass at the time (more guitar), so it just wasn't getting played. Like @audreycashin said, cuts through really well (better than a J, IMO). Good fat sound with just the neck pickup, snappy highs and solid lows with both on, and a great burpy tone with just the bridge pickup.
