I have a tribute L2k. Personally, I tried a couple Tributes and one US model. The difference between them wasn't enough for me to justify the price. I also found an excellent Tribute though and have heard the quality control can vary quite a bit. If you're in a position to try a few out, that's what I would suggest.
Ah yes patience will pay off Im sure. Its hard to do when you want one so badly.
Yeah thats what Id like to do, try out a few and see whats what. Unfortunately there are none in my area to try so Id have to blindly buy one off of Reverb or the classifieds and just hope its a quality tribby. It may be a relief for the gas but also is a gamble.
Ive had decent success in buying blind but I also dont want to keep testing that.
Im thinking of selling some gear to help facilitate the L2K funds and maybe find a nice USA for around 700 - 800.
Given the typical prices I've seen here for used USA model G&Ls, including the used L-2500 that I bought here, I'd say that's the better approach. I've seen almost nothing but praise for the Tributes (never played one myself), but I have NO regrets about buying my used USA model, especially given the upgrades/options it has.
Yes, you'll have to have some patience. However, unless you're waiting for something very specific (like I was), used L's pop up often enough that you probably won't have to wait for very long. If at all.

I do have some specifics, maple fret board and four strings. Not sure on what neck style - feel Id want or be most comfy with. I do like the neck on my 08 USA Fender jazz.
Save up a bit more and get a used US, bought 2 Tributes before buying a USA ( I wanted to make sure the tone and sound is what I wanted) so anyway I bought a Tribute M2000 and a Tribute L2500 for the price both Basses were great and sounded great and played great. With that said I found my L2500 USA I wanted pulled the trigger and ordered it. It plays amazing like nothing else I have played, From USA fenders to High end Ibanez and even my euro spector. I have not played the crazy priced custom basses so am sure there is something that plays nicer but for me the USA L2500 used is worth every penny and sounds amazing.
Tribute if you aren't sure of what you want, USA if you do and want the best and nothing less, in my opinion. The best things are worth waiting for.
Ahhh, so in that case you need to figure out just how how patient you're willing to be. Or, should I say, how patient you're capable of being.
In my case I wanted one of a few specific bursts, a maple neck, a 5-string, and a factory-installed K-mod. It was purely a want thing and I was in no rush and it took probably a few years while I casually looked at the For Sale ads. Then, once I saw one pop up I jumped on it right away. And I got even luckier than I could have hoped because this one also has a matching headstock and blank fingerboard as well (no dots, blocks, or other markers).
But, bottom line, it's a question of patience. Get a Tribute now and get 90% of what you want RIGHT NOW or wait and get exactly what you want but at some indeterminate time in the future? Not an easy decision, but the decision is all yours!

Good call. Especially if you'd rather have the "jazz" neck. As delta7fred said, the Tribute L-2000s only came with larger profiles. If you like the narrower ones, look for a #6 (1.5" nut, 7.5" radius) or a #8 (1.5" nut, 12" radius). The #8 is a pretty popular option on them.
Im not sure what style neck I'd want on the L2K. I am use to the jazz profile. Something in between a J and P is intriguing.
As someone who previously played a lot of J necks, I love the G&L #12. It's a perfect blend of both, and it fits my hand perfectly.
5 days in on my new (to me) L1500 fretless, and I'm still loving it. No new pics yet, but I'm wondering if the body is ash. The grain isn't as wild as sone ash bodied basses I've owned and seen, but the grain of my bass is wider than most alder basses I've owned. I've also been playing around with my amp eq settings, and I've been getting a great variety of tones with it. The neck feels great, too, even though it's glossy (I prefer satin finished necks, so I can always Scotchbrite it if I want).
Whoever owned this bass prior to me definitely took care of it. The board is in great shape, and the body is relatively clean, with just a few scuffs around the output-jack area. The back corner of the headstock "hook" has been chipped off a bit, and there's a few dings around the top of the headstock, but it's to be expected on a 20-ish year old bass.

US made in 2006 with a ver. 1.1 preamp. Got it from a gentlemen for a great price! Bring her to band practice yesterday and it was a blast! This thing ROAR!!!! I have to drop the volume and bass control down after the first song.
Anyone can suggest me some strings for her? I play mostly trash/sludge music with a lot of fast picking. I'm thorn between DR Strings DDT and Sunbeam.

Nice bass! I love my L2500. If you are doing alot of drop tuning stuff then you should really give the DDT's a try. Heard they are really good for that. One other you could consider that I like quite a bit is the Dunlop Nickle Super Brights.

Any of you guys plugged your L2ks into some of the newer cutting edge micro heads?
I'm thinking maybe the quilter might be my best bet to replace and or backup my mesa d180, any input would be nice, the only head i've tried thus far is the mesa d800, which sounded great, but it might be a little pricey compared to the quilter.
