Barrel jacks typically go bad every few years. The football plate allows you to use a very high-quality Switchcraft 1/4" phono jack, which will last forever. I've swapped bad barrel jacks out for football plates on previous G&L's. Haven't yet on my current L2500, but I will as soon as that jack goes.

Actually, the L-5000 model had an SB body and a 4+1 headstock 30-or-so years ago.

I designed a pg for my M2500. I really like it. What do you think?

While it's not my cup of tea, changing the knobs to black really sets it off in a very good way. The contrast makes it look very sharp. I may have to put some black knobs on mine... even though they won't have the same impact as yours, because I have no guard.

I'm guessing that the football jack is the one I'm having to replace on the custom L2500 I received last fall.

The bass wasn't even a daily player, I was using the LB-100 for recording, so the 5er wasn't getting much use.

The bass jack crapped out intermittently while I was auditioning for a cover band, not a good first impression.

"Football" refers to the shape of the plate that's screwed onto the edge of the body, with a regular panel-mount jack installed into that. If you got a bad jack, it's probably a cheap Chinese knockoff of a proper Switchcraft. Since the jack is open, you can bend the contacts back into place for a tighter connection. Barrel jacks are mounted straight into the body, not on a separate plate. They are fully enclosed, so you can't bend the contacts back into place.

Good quality Switchcraft jacks don't usually have problems with the contacts bending out of shape, even after years and years of repeated use.

Probably not likely any time soon. I imagine they'll give it a good long run as a USA-only offering before they flood the market with overseas versions. But who knows?
