"Football" refers to the shape of the plate that's screwed onto the edge of the body, with a regular panel-mount jack installed into that. If you got a bad jack, it's probably a cheap Chinese knockoff of a proper Switchcraft. Since the jack is open, you can bend the contacts back into place for a tighter connection. Barrel jacks are mounted straight into the body, not on a separate plate. They are fully enclosed, so you can't bend the contacts back into place.
Good quality Switchcraft jacks don't usually have problems with the contacts bending out of shape, even after years and years of repeated use.
