Now that you mention it... I did forget, that on my Orange AD200, running the SB2 into the active jack worked wonders for me. Are you saying that was bad? As I recall it was a huge help.

I'm just going to sit here and have a daydream about how awesome that must have sounded.

As you know, the concept of the suction pump is centuries old. Well, really, that's all this is. Except that instead of sucking water, I'm sucking life. I've just sucked one year of your life away. I might one day go as high as five, but I really don't know what that would do to you. So, let's just start with what we have. What did this do to you? Tell me. I ask my wife maybe once per month if my daughter (now 6) is old enough for the PB and/or Willow. I'm starting to get impatient!

For the record... One of the most ridiculous things about Orange is that their heads and cabs are not modular. No thought was given to stacking anything. The AD200 head hangs off the the sides of several of their cabs... falling awkwardly between its rubber feet... It makes no sense to balance an all tube head on a rumbling speaker cab, which is now unstable... So for those of you considering an Orange down the road. FYi!

No, that's good! That way you can dime the volume on your bass without overloading the input stage and get the real MFD quality that makes the SB basses special. Or you can turn it down if you don't want to be you and wander back toward "Fender" land.

Yes, cool! It did sound awesome through my AD that way.

For the record... One of the most ridiculous things about Orange is that their heads and cabs are not modular. No thought was given to stacking anything. The AD200 head hangs off the the sides of several of their cabs... falling awkwardly between its rubber feet... It makes no sense to balance an all tube head on a rumbling speaker cab, which is now unstable... So for those of you considering an Orange down the road. FYi!

Well, I'm of the extremely narrow opinion that, as far as bass amps are concerned, rack size should be relegated to dustbin of history. Pretty much any amp, tube or otherwise, should be designed to fit properly over a 1x12.

I can't tell whether my lame gripe is curmudgeonly or whippersnapperish.

My daughter could recite Princess Bride, Willow and the Lord of the Rings trilogy by the time she was 6! I am actually not exaggerating, it was funny/ disturbing and, sometimes, annoying (Anybody want a peanut?!)

She is a true fantasy/ scifi lover like her old man

Agreed on that... so many head/ cab combos look ridiculous and they are from the SAME manufacturer!

Also, I think the word that you're searching for is curmudgersnapperish ... or is it whippermudgeonly? I can never remember

Adding a solid preamp would resolve the issue.
Both Bart and Nordstrand pres have a 18volt option which would resolve this issue in a JB5.
An Audere drop in plate pre would work good as well.

Thanks, I will try to lock down the bass I'm looking at and try it out first. I may be able to cope with the volume (if it's a problem) if it gets the tone I'm looking for.

I had lunch with the rep from Orange one day and I told him about it. His response was that Orange was concerned with pristine sound, and that was it.

It sounds like a good argument on paper... but then, I imagined engineering the Shelby Cobra to perfection: size, weight, horse power, center of gravity, braking, steering, suspension, and after nailing it all, putting 13" G78 bias ply tires on it. hard to have fun when you're in constant fear of mishap... and if it was easily avoidable, then why not?

If you love Orange as I do, then you can easily deal with it, but it is a point worth noting if you plan on gigging with it on a busy stage... But, I can't imagine doing that. The OBC410 weighs a metric ton and the head is stupid heavy!

I think that's correct. I got a recent build in Empress and there was no feedback that it was a problem.

I dont think empress has ever been listed on their page. My dealer said they seem to have it whenever they ask for it on a build so that's probably still true.

I thought they would list it as an option if it was currently available on a per order basis so this is good to know. I'm not ready to take the plunge right now but when I am I'll work with a G&L dealer on the order.

I've had a beautiful Sb-2T (the one in my avatar) with #8 neck for a couple years now but I've been really gassing for an LB-100 lately. I know that I can probably get pretty close tonally with my current bass but was wondering if you guys had a choice between the two, which would you go for? I don't have lots of money right now so I'd probably have to trade the SB-2T in for an LB if I really wanted it that badly. Of course, I could always be patient and save up for a third bass as well but that is difficult. Any thoughts on the matter are appreciated!

Would going with one of the new Tribute LB100s allow you to keep both? I haven't played one, as they are relatively new, but I'd hate to give up the magic that comes with an SB2 (with a tone control, no less) for G&Ls version of a p-bass. I can understand wanting that P-bass sound, though, and was at least partially the reason I ended up with an SB-1.

And if a Trib is still too expensive, wait a while, and see the unfortunate drop in value and pick up a used one cheap.
