If you really have your heart set on black Hardware, take it to a shop and have it Powder coated in black.
I have an 82 L2KE that when I get around to refinishing it I am going to do just that since most of the orginal black hardware is pitted, peeling and rusted.

Hi, G&L club. I hope this gets me in the door. It's my newly acquired '93 L-2000. I really like this bass a lot. It plays like a dream and sound great! Very versatile. I like passive series mode and active parallel mode the best; both pickups selected and the bass rolled back a touch. The body is a refinish. It was a sparkly green color and was pretty beat up. The previous previous owner had it professionally re-finished in this great silver color, which is what sold me on the bass. (silver and rosewood, oh yeah!). The neck is nicely worn but the stainless steel frets have kept it going. It also has an Extender installed, which until now, I hadn't ever tried, but man is that a super useful gadget! The pickup and switching configuration along with the Extender make this, quite possibly, the most versatile bass ever.

I have a question for you G&L aficionados:

Is it possible to buy black hardware directly from G&L? Namely, a bridge, knobs, string retainer, and tuners? I thought this bass would look great with black hardware, and notice it is not available for purchase in the G&L store? The chrome also looks great, so it's not a huge deal if not, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

This comes up a lot... especially since the black has some serious fans, like myself, but as @TinIndian said, make your own. It's the cheapest and easiest. A powder coater would charge less to refinish yours than to buy new.

If you are talking about the original crinkle coating from the early 80s, I guess it has fans but I sort of hate that stuff. Of the examples I had, they ranged from permanently dirty to permanently dirty, peeling, and corroded. I'm sure any new powder coating process will be an improvement though.

As an aside; There was an all black SB-2 (gen 2) on ebay a few years ago. All black chrome hardware (possibly powder coated), an all satin-black neck and body, and model-delete decal. Like some sort of stealth special edition or something. I almost bought it myself, but my GAS fund was a bit low at the time. Wish I had, the cool factor was off the charts.

Yes the wrinkle black... Which I love and comment on way more than I should! I have made several blacked out hardware basses, and personally, I prefer paint over powder coat. It's thinner and holds up better for the application IMO.

Right? When I saw the listing it seemed to jog a memory about a short-run series of some all-black G&L models. That recollection has pretty much faded away nowadays, if it was a reality in the first place, but the all black SB-2 on ebay was obviously factory-built that way. Maybe someone will know more about it and post.

I'm going to start picking up parts here and there to complete black out the hardware on my SB-2 (including the pickguard screws). The hardest part would be the bridge, but I'm going to be proactive and just order a Bridge - G&L Saddle Lock 4-string from G&L and have it coated black. After that, I'll likely have the headstock painted to match the body for the full black out .

Man, a fully murdered-out SB-2 would be hot. Single-ply pick guard, no dot markers, black screw heads and jack. Can you get black anodized fret wire?

I think black anodized fret wire would quickly wear out on the top surface and look silver again - IMO.

The only pathway to embrace total bass darkness is via fretless. Knobs, tuners and a guard are easy- now to powder coat that 2Tek bridge on my G&L jazz. High mass bridge, under 9 pounds and smokes any jazz that ever had Fender or G&L on the headstock. The neck feels like a jazz version of an early L2K neck. Yes my G&L JAZZ ya know the one Leo SHOULD have made.

dedpool1052, I am really really anticipating this single coil. Blends are OK in wine and cheap scotch but IMO basses sing best in single coil. Recently I let my 1956 P go. It was almost like cutting off my left cojone. The birdseye neck was insane and I've owned her since 1976 but it developed an E-tuner headstock crack (after Detroit Metro baggage a$$hats left it out on a freezing tarmac for 3 hours back in '88) that was not faring well in the desert. Hoping this appeases that pain somewhat.

Dayum that makes me almost want to visit NY for a playdate. I love themed collections (mine are fretted/fretless pairs) and your monkey seems to be relaying an important lesson to aspiring young bassists. BTW I once played in a band here in Tucson with 3 NYkers. They said I drove like a cabbie.

A '56 P? You have any pics of it?

I've only ever gotten a chance to play some of the reissue SCPBs, but they have a character all of their own.
Really different, but I prefer them over the split-coil that became so popular.

Bad refin with beautiful birds eye neck until the crack. Bought it in 1976 for $25. It had been painted with a brush in a nightmarish Fullerton Pink, came as a mounted neck and a bag of parts and sounded like nothing else strung with rounds.

Hi everyone I am finally back from vacation and have a lot of catching up to do. I went to Nashville for a bachelorette party which quite honestly was miserable but it was cool to see all the live music, musicians, their gear etc. Nashville certainly is a lot different from when I was there about 6 years ago!

Anyways I am still eagerly awaiting my clear blue LB heavily inspired by @jmlee . I ordered this sweet Couch strap for it but with white ends instead of black. Back to work today but hopefully able to practice tonight. It's been too long since I've been able to play!! Have a big gig in a couple weeks I need to prep for.
