Yay! Glad to hear it. That's a lovely finish. I'm quite in love with my new LB100. I finally got the La Bella flats on it and am *really* enjoying the old school thump—and the continuing prettiness! I've got a bunch of P-style basses and each is set up to deliver something different. On the G&L front, my SB-2 has Chromes on it and my Wunkay has TI flats so each has a distinct voice. The other night I took the LB100/La Bellas to my big band rehearsal and played it for the night with some foam at the bridge. [I'd screwed up my left arm heaving a bookcase into a dumpster and didn't fancy a night on upright with it elevated.] It sounded just great, warm and thumpy, and with the 7 lb weight it was a very easy night prepping for the upcoming JazzFest here in Halifax.
BTW!!! To all of my family here at the G&L Club, if anyone needs PG help, just PM me... I'm still tying to decide on the right color for my Kilo, and I have to get my hands on some black sparkle.
I specifically did not put the PG project here, because it was a vast post, and while a Kilo was used for the model, the information was general in nature and it would apply to any bass. Soooo, I was afraid that it might bring a ton of non-G&L traffic here.
However, it seems to have brought no traffic at all!!! Crickets...

Okay... For everyone who stuck it out... and those of you who give a rats butt... I present, the pickguard project. It took three hours... which included periodic monitoring of my 400 gallon turtle tank refill, photo's, set up, and reciting passages from the book of Revelations, so that God would unleash his fury on 6 strawberry flies, which I've now written an oath in blood, that I will never rest until they are pan seared, quartered, decapitated, and then set upon the prongs of my crown. Enjoy...
Before...
Removed PG... Of course, in typical lazy fashion, I slipped it out from under the strings.
Grab yourself a good piece of wood or the likes... I use furniture grade maple ply, but anything good and clean, and not warped will work. Ok, now that you've grabbed your wood...
Trace your PG on it and drill two or three holes for some screws, or all if you like. It's your funeral.
Viola! Here's how it should look...
Now cut that out using a jig saw or scroll saw, close to line, but leaving the line visible. Preferably get much closer than I did... Three Vodaks into this project already.
Here's the router table that I use. It really sucks, but there's not much mid grade router stuff out there... So... It's either the Dora the Explorer model, or the $89,000 Bob Villa model... I use Crapsman. With a Ridgid router... all my stuff is Ridged because it all has a lifetime warranty. See that bit I have in there? It's a flush bit. Set it so tht the bearing rides along your PG.
Like so...
Now go around, trimming the wood while using your PG as a guide. And if you're lucky and have not had too many Vodaks, it'll look like this!
Pop off the old PG, put some duct tape loops or sticky back tape on your Jig (don't use screws) and then stick your new guard blank on it, face up...
Now, PG face down, reverse the process and route the new material, using the jig as a guide... And hopefully, it looks like this.
Flip it over, and drill out the PG screw holes and control holes..
Smack on some insulating, self stick aluminum tape...
Trim and clean it... and BLAMMO!
I hate it... But no worries, because now, I can pop em out all day. I will poly urethane the jig several times, and order up whatever I want... In this case, I already have some mirror, like my blue LB, so I'll probably make one of those tomorrow. Once you have the jig, it only takes 15 minutes to make new PG's.
Sorry that this is as in depth as I can get here... TB only allows 20 pics and I'm knee deep in Vodaks. Damn you @bonin in the boneyard !

Beautiful! The neck pickup on my SB-2s is the same as what you have on your SB-1 and I can tell you it sounds fantastic!

The finish on that bass is so freakin' nice that I'd be tempted to play it naked. I mean... Without a pickguard. I might still wear clothing. Might. It really is a nice bass...
Off topic- I was out fishing with my son this morning and we were blasting Misfits @armyadarkness along with some Fugazi and early GG Allin. Mighta scared the fish away.
I tried relentlessly... but as stated... by the time I posted, it was after having survived a 16 hour day, 100 degrees, ridiculous humidity, and Satan's minions flies! That's pretty damn cool.
They do have a certain bite when strung with rounds.
This SB1 has it's own bite too. There's grit, some thump but mostly an even clarity with cut that reminds me of my '56 though slightly refined. Overall she's more fun to play than the 56 though they feel and sound like the bickering siblings they are. It is definitely the successor to Leos earlier single P's and holds it's own with any of them. It won't overtake my SB1 2nd generation just as my 56 P never overshadowed my 62. While I prefer the thicker low end and mids of the split P the single coil still holds a good chunk of the pie. This one's a keeper. Student Bass my a$$.

I had heard "Student Bass" back in the day, but more recently somebody on here said it stood for "Standard Bass". ...not sure of either though.
I couldn't find a reliable story on the name, either. It's too bad because Leo had a flare for names, so it's possible it stands for something cool and sci-fi-ish.
...I've been on vacation and away from my SB-2 for four days and miss her badly.
I think "student bass" was just some speculation from another G&L forum. Kinda makes sense since they were more basic and lower cost than the deluxe L series. I had a slab '84 SB-2 that I regret selling. It was pretty cool.
Let's settle on "super bass" and call it a day.
I call SB's my Sum Beeches. Since you mentioned slabs is anyone else here smoking ribs for the Holiday? This one is also a slab body and G&L goodness at 8.45 lbs is always a winner. If I had a quad of these pups I'd put them in my Hamers.
