G&L Club Part 7

I'm loving the fact that if I use the passive input on my Ashdown LB30 amp it acts like an overdrive channel, even at lower volume with the bass preamp shut off. If I crank the volume to about 12 noon it fuzzes out immediately. Plugging into the active channel cleans it up considerably, but higher volume puts substantial dirt into the signal. It's glorious! Such an underrated amp, imo. I have it paired with a 15" Ashdown Classic UK cab, and I think of it as my Bizarro Ampeg B15:bassist: I may have to change the preamp tubes, though. I seem to remember that the previous owner had put in preamp tubes that were different than stock.

Yup. Had one and dug it, but eventually got impatient with the eq and sold it. Kept a ctm-15, though. It will be hard to resist getting a little stubby once those become available.

Yeah, the eq is more subtle than some, but I've come to appreciate the "set it and forget it" nature of it. That CTM-15 is a neat little amp. I was actually looking at one of those, but it was selling for almost the same price as the LB30 I ended up buying. But in the end, you can't go wrong with a low-wattage tube amp. Viva la dirt!

I just didn't get passive tone stacks back then, but I've had four more all-tube amps since and I've figured out how to work with them.

It's like growing up driving automatics and them trying to learn stick, or something. :wacky:

Hi, G&L club. I hope this gets me in the door. It's my newly acquired '93 L-2000. I really like this bass a lot. It plays like a dream and sound great! Very versatile. I like passive series mode and active parallel mode the best; both pickups selected and the bass rolled back a touch. The body is a refinish. It was a sparkly green color and was pretty beat up. The previous previous owner had it professionally re-finished in this great silver color, which is what sold me on the bass. (silver and rosewood, oh yeah!). The neck is nicely worn but the stainless steel frets have kept it going. It also has an Extender installed, which until now, I hadn't ever tried, but man is that a super useful gadget! The pickup and switching configuration along with the Extender make this, quite possibly, the most versatile bass ever.

I have a question for you G&L aficionados:

Is it possible to buy black hardware directly from G&L? Namely, a bridge, knobs, string retainer, and tuners? I thought this bass would look great with black hardware, and notice it is not available for purchase in the G&L store? The chrome also looks great, so it's not a huge deal if not, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been wondering the same thing. I recently picked up an ASAT Special guitar, and was considering adding one of those dual fulcrum vibratos listed in their online store, but I only saw chrome. Might be a good question for my G&L dealer.

No black hardware since the 80's so no bridge. The Tuners are Schallers , as are the knobs. Retainers were never available in black.
