The scuttlebutt is that there is, indeed, an SB-2 5 string on the way sometime in 2018. I had an immediate need for a PJ so I got a 4 banger for now, to tide me over til then.For now at least, that's not too hard. I only play fives.
Doesn't stop me from drooling, though. Nor does it mean that G&L won't come out with a fiver.
Like some others here I want a Kilo with additional P pup. Positioned not SB not LB but 62'P. That's 1/4" closer to the neck than the SB's. Stacked volume/tone for the P everything else current Kilo. A KiloBee. With a killer bee logo. OK I want it with or without the logo. Do we have the cojones to hit up Greg at Rocket for a run of ten? I'm in for a fretless but if they can't be had I'm going to cut a Kilo. In the meantime I swapped the 88' fretless neck from the other L1K with my bowling ball SB2. Oh Hell YES! This is going to be contentious.

From what I've seen/heard/measured/yadayada, The SB, original LB-100 and first few years of the reissue were all placed 3/8" closer to the bridge.
After a few years, they did move the pickup in the LB-100 forward to match the traditional "P" spot.
Aside from that, I do like the idea of a KiloBee. The MFD is narrow enough and closer to the bridge than an MM pickup, so there is plenty of room to cram a P in there as well.
For me though, as they're such different pickups, I doubt they'd blend well, if at all.
I'd opt for a 2-way switch for pickup selection. Basically either-or, but not both.
Re: KiloBee... can we make the split pickup a reverse P orientation?
Were you thinking alnico or MFD? I bet the MFD could work. I'd like to hear the both full-on tone. If it's good, I bet it would be a winner. I think I'd be less of a fan if it was an either/or kinda deal.
Either pup. A 3-way switch could be the ticket. They'll blend especially with the humbucker in single coil and it'll walk all over the single in an SB2. Add a 4-way switch for OMG mode which should be standard issue in the Kilo and until that happens it's load weighs in a little light compared with an L1K.

Everyone is going to love this idea, but everyone is going to want different particulars. For me:
Dual volumes and pickup switch (on/both/on). Series/parallel/single (bridge side—better for blend)/OMG(neck side) for humbucker. As close to P position as possible for the split coil, and not reverse.

After hearing that the L-1000 was officially returning, I went to the G&L website to check out the specs and found this:

Measuring my mid-90's SB1 & SB2 with my 62 P side by side the difference is 1/4" but in basses as in life it's the distance from the nut that matters.
All I'm saying is "out for delivery".

Saw something on BBL said they were phased in during 2017.
I'm going to ask my dealer about this when my SB-1 finally arrives here in a few days. Had no idea I was being treated to graphite rods on top of everything else G&L offers.
I measured the placement on my '00 Fender and my '13 SB-2.
It's interesting there's that bit of variance in placement.

L-2500 tribute that needs some love. Sounds great, and will only improve once I figure out the controls a bit better.
