G&L Club Part 7

Yes. I double checked the wiring last night. When switching OMG in and out while I'm switches to series, the change is subtle, but still there.

What value caps are you using?

I had a fretted L2500 wired up that way for a while and I didn't think it was an earth-shattering change. It was pretty subtle. The caps serve to filter off some of the highs from one coil of each pickup, so it's more or less like the single coil mode in the highs, but series mode in the lows. Both coils are still providing the lows, so there will be more lows than highs as only one coil is providing extended highs.

My fretless L2500 is all stock. I decided it wasn't really worth the trouble to add that on my fretless, if that means anything.

I also found it to be the kind of thing that makes more difference when the bass is cranked up in a mix. The extended highs cut through a little better, even if they're subtle when soloed.

The difference is subtle as you say, does this mean it's correct?
This is all testing along in my house, not in a mix.

I don't know who coined the OMG term, but I never thought it was *that* good. It was a nice top boost to the regular series mode, but not really significant. By the time the treble boost was added in the E-series, it was insignificant, IMO.

Right. This makes me thing that my "OMG mod" is correct. I did expect more of an OMG then it gives. I think I'll remove mine.
I'm really enjoying the single coil mod.

Actually it is a low boost and not a high boost. When you put coils in series mode that essentially doubles the output voltage which is a 6 dB boost in output. When you put a capacitor across one of the coils it shorts highs to ground (like a tone control) but leaves the bass notes. Thus you have two coils for bass or 6 dB louder and one coil for treble (which is normal loudness). The net effect is that even though the bass is using only passive tone controls which can only cut and not boost, you still have a mode where you can get a bass boost without active electronics. One can then use the bass control to both boost and cut. Clever.

And yeah, I wonder who started the OMG term too. It's been around forever, though.

Very clever.

I miss my '82 L1000. Wish I hadn't sold it. I love my L2000, but there was just something about that Hog L1000. And I used it in OMG mode most of the time 20 years before I ever heard it called OMG mode. :)

Yep, that's what I said in a previous post. The overall effect relative to pure series mode is "high boost". I think Leo called it "single coil with bass boost", though, which is not entirely accurate.

Actually, I don't think it was single coil. I believe it was in series but I'll have to check with the G&L brain trust to get a definitive answer.
The amazing thing, at the time, was that it was all passive and still got the boost.

Regardless of the nomenclature, it is a pretty way to get some additional brightness and clarity out of the series connected pickups. For my needs, it's still not quite enough, but it was innovative!

Hey thanks! I had a 1987 El Toro fretless in the same color configuration, except that it had an ebony fretboard. I had to sell it when my kids were infants and money was tight. So this is a reunion of sorts!

I've seen that before but I still seem to remember some conflicting info. It doesn't really matter though. :)

I think OMG mode as well as "wunkay" came from the G&L fans on the old dudepit forum.

Personally I don't care for OMG mode and never use it. I can get all the bass I need and more out of the other two modes with just the bass control but with more clarity. I could never get past how OMG mode makes the tone a bit murky and IMO artificial sounding. Same thing with L2000s in series. Don't care for it.
