Thanks guys! If you're interested, I could post more updates. The only thing is it might be a while before I get to paint/finish it... The goal is to have a 54 pbass inspired L2K, except with less knobs (passive only).

Mine too! Thrust, Flood and Survival of the Fittest are three of my favorite albums. I've seen Paul play a few times with different guys and he always laid down a fat slab of funk!
He's a phenomenal bass player! My favorite albums are Head Hunters, Thrust, Man-Child, and Secrets
Saw him play for the first time about 4 years ago and the drummer was Vinnie Colaiuta and the bassist was James Genus. They were pretty good...
Pretty much what you'd expect - full range with a nice peak in the mids, essentially the split P MFD tone but with all the extra sounds you get from a fretless.
Thanks for that, hadn't occurred to me - thought they'd be all proprietary ownership about it.

I think I mentioned a few months ago about getting a great deal on a M-2000 Tribute. Liked everything about it but it's sound was kind of bland, especially compared to my US L2ks and other basses. I tried all kinds of strings to bring out some mids in a more even way. Well, I think I finally found the right string for my M-2000. TI Jazz Rounds. Used them today in a live setting and they made the bass more even sounding and filled in some mids when the pickups were blended equally. The neck PU sounded really nice by itself and blends sounded great as well. Very happy while playing and hearing a little more thickness across the tonal board. It's a nice bass and very comfortable to play. Having a couple other US G&Ls I was a little hesitant to buy my first "lower end" G&L, but I'm very glad I did. It feels good, sounds good and looks good--and I have not emptied my wallet in the process!
Ha, that's exactly what I found with my MJ4...sounded kinda meh with the stock strings which, IICR, were D'addario nickels. Which is odd because those are my default rounds for all my basses, and I normally like how they sound. Installed an old set of TI Jazz Rounds on the MJ...voila...the bass came alive.
I may be mistaken but I think the M-2000 and the MJ share the same mil spec preamp, which might explain why two basses with very different pickups are both very picky about strings. That's pretty much the opposite of my experience with typical MFD pickups (with or without a pre), which seem to sound great with every string type I've ever thrown at them.

Interesting! Meh is a good description of the M2k prior to the TIs. Sunbeams I think sounded the best in my trials, but it was still just OK and sounded like just another random bass. (With MFDs, even when I get a big round/smooth sound it has G&L distinctiveness all over it.)
Indeed not the same same experience with MFDs. I have GHS Flats on my Blackburst BABE L2k which I think you were involved in (incredible sounding) and Round Core Boomers (currently and subject to change) on my Redburst L2k, which is the most aggressive of the three I've owned. I have to watch and slightly tame the mids on those, but on the M2k I needed to "find" some mids. Now the M sounds darn right good!

Ha! Unfortunately, in person the cherryburst finish clashes with the bordello red furniture. Although, it does integrate pretty nicely with the hardwood floor.
