G&L Club Part 7

In my recent exposure to g&l basses,i’ve found both my lb100 and the jb2 to have a razor sharp sound. That absolutely seems to bring out the best with flatwound strings. My lb100 had factory nickle roundwounds on it when i got it,and I didn’t like the sound at all...now has a set of Chromes and sounds great. The jb2 came with Labella flats,and it sounds fab with those. I don’t know if you were using roundwound strings on yours,but it just seems like they can be pretty harsh sounding.

Chromes on an LB100 are just magic. I've managed to tame my JB-2 by putting warm rounds on: DR Pure Blues. It's still bright-ish but very nice and strikingly articulate. [In fairness, I replaced the pickups on my Trib JB-2 with US Bartolinis...]

Getting back to the burst-on-the-back thing, there's really no good reason for wanting a back burst to go with the front since you won't see it on stage. So black-on-the-back should be just fine. That said, though, G&L does such beeootiful bursts, that I love have a great uninterruped expanse of burst on the back to look at when I handle the instrument. That's just me.

That’s funny,i was rummaging through my parts box,and found a unused set of Pure blues.
I may have to try them on the jb2. I have a set on my ‘78 Yamaha bb1200,they sound and play wonderful on there.

I have Pure Blues on an SB-2T, A Fender Jazz, A Fender Precision, and a Fender Areodyne. My favorite strings.

If it’s the one coming from the Cerritos store, I stopped in and played that one a few weeks ago. Could use a good cleaning and a setup, but good condition overall.

This actually is going to end up being helpful. The one from Nashua had a different string retainer put on. I don’t like having open holes in my headstock (from the old retainer) so this one is going back and the one from Cerritos is coming in. Thanks!

Fwiw My L2500 sounds killer strung with EB Cobalt Flats solid mid punch, bright without fingernoise or too much zingy overtone.

They seem to go dead and unusable really quickly - and I like flats and old, broken in roundwounds.

EB Cobalts are a different beast (both the rounds and flats) I had previously avoided EB strings for the lifespan and tone.
Tension : snappy not floppy I tune 1/2 step down at all times.(I have TIs on my SB 1 and have used LaBella LTF on this L2500, did not like)
Lifespan IIRC I installed the EB-CF's in September 2018 It's my main Bass, it sits out in the living room gets played daily.
Only this last week or so the ping and topend has started mellowing nicely yet, now since they have they've lost what made them cool, the Round Woundness I may replace, well see.
I find Chomes to be "hollow" and uneven. At first. Especially on a 5. The B is clink and boom, and the G is twangy. By the time the settle in and even out, the B is mumble and thud. I use the B a lot...
I liked GHS Brite Flats on Sparkle too, and that is, tonally about where the EB's are at now, middy atriculate, expressive, and bright for a flat.
The EBs are sticky/draggy outta the box, but that fades pretty quickly.
New, they really do sound like rounds.
Also they are higher output strings especially for flats, hence allow for a bit more dynamic range.

IMHO, IME, YMMV ETC.

I've had a set of EB Cobalt Flats on a p bass for the last year and a half. Still sound great and I've never liked flats. Only thing, I'm not sure EB is making them any longer. They have the cobalt rounds on their site still, but not the flats.

Just checked my various string suppliers and can't find evidence of the EB Cobalt Flats.

However...there's 13 sets left at Amazon for only $26 ($40 off):

Looks intriguing,but i’m very put off by the many reviews citing strings breaking on installation.

Had a pleasant encounter last night. I volunteer at the United Gospel Mission every Thursday for their Alpha program. There are a few volunteers who play P&W music for their Alpha program. We usually have 2 or 3 acoustic guitars, a cajon, a flute, a mandolin, and a guy that plays mandolin and violin, and me. I don't usually take my SB-2T, but I was in a hurry and all the stuff I needed was already in the case ready to go, so I grabbed it and ran. It was the first time I'd taken it. The guy who plays mandolin and violin raved about how pretty it is and how good it sounded. I was playing through a Rumble 40 v3 combo.

I guess if the Cobalt flats might be discontinued then there's no reason for me to try them out at this point. It would suck to find out I really like them and then not be able to get more. I'll leave the remaining sets for the fans who'll want every set they can get before they're gone.

Funny that the same thing happened to me with Sadowsky Black Label flats. I bought one set to try them and then Sadowsky discontinued them, so I never bothered installing them.

I'm happy with my Chromes, though, so no big deal. But I'll also do some research on the GHS Brite Flats. If they're pretty stiff feeling and have a good life span, then they might be the ones I try next just for kicks.

Haven't posted here on TB,but kicking it around,might have to let one of my G&L's go? Some much needed repairs on some interiors walls,have been putting off? Need to cover the cost of having contractor do the work,not very handy myself. I am going to sell the 2017 L1000,showing in my avatar. Have it posted on Reverb,right now. Haven't decided on posting here? Might put a feeler out for it here? I know this is not a for sale thread,so correct me if wrong. Thanks!

I know right. I've never liked flats in my life, been a round wound player since i yanked the flats my 1st bass came with from Fender off. I tried these on my P bass and love em. Flats that sound like rounds and last. Same set has been on that P bass for a year and a half and still sound great. I guess when they finally do come off it'll be back to rounds. A shame too great strings and that bass sounds the best it's ever sounded with those strings.

I know they don't have the magic ingredient cobalt in them, and it's been a while since I tried EB Cobalts, but I found the EB Group III-IV etc strings to be very much in the same tone famiy to my ear. I have some on my '63 Jazz and their "cut" seems to last and last. Perhaps worth a try as I don't think they're overly expensive.

for me it's difficult to say witch one is premium and witch one is "standard"
