G&L Club Part 7

Leo Fender obviously felt that there was a difference as he filed a patent for this feature. According to the patent - slot at right angles to the string give more fundamental and works similar to the big pole pieces on a MM. while parallel to the string give two points similar to a jazz or p pickup and has less fundamental.

I experimented and for me I could hear a subtle change - but not big enough that they bothered using it for more than a year- maybe bigger effect on guitars. I have all my pole pieces at 45degrees as it sounds better there to my ears
Interesting! I totally agree about getting the pole height matched to the fb radius (as oldskoolskatedad mentioned), but I can't hear any difference cause by slot direction. Then again, I'm just OCD enough that I always have all the slots facing the same way anyway (whichever way it might be). :)

Wow! That is a stunning find...'grats. It appears to have mixed chrome and black hardware? Extra "cool factor" points for that, too!

Thanks! I'm still a little shocked that it's actually going to be mine. I ran across an '82 L2KE on Reverb while looking for something else. Other than some finish checks it was in great shape so I made an offer. Of course I started researching everything I could find on the Series-E L2K and got more and more excited. My offer was declined and was about to pay full price but decided to check Ebay. And there was the cleanest L2KE that I had seen in my 2 days of obsessive research and made an offer immediately. After more than 24 hrs without the seller declining or accepting my offer, I couldn't dream of letting it get away and "bought it now". The same seller also has this beautiful '83 SB-2.

I’d love to hear that one.....

Yeah, I've noticed that it's definitely not as noticeable, but it's still a force to be contended with. My challenge is that there is no way to get directly at the mids from the bass. Because they are so prominent relative to what I'm used to, some on the fly adjusting always seems required. I'm just looking for a way to bring the natural balance point a little closer to the other basses so that I don't have to redo the EQ from scratch every time.

Right now a pedal board or the the "contour, mid-scoop etc." control is how I've been dealing with this. For those amps with parametric mids I always tune those parms while setting up. Fooling with them on the fly from the vantage point of the band rather than the audience ( I play without FOH) hasn't really worked well for me unless I'm really familiar with the room. This is so noticeable that one time when I brought a P along with the L2K and switched to it, I had to race to put some mids back because it basically disappeared when I switched.
I can appreciate not digging the L2k 'tone'. I like traditional alnico pickup tone from a P bass or a Jazz bass too. I play both and an L2k as well. But I do feel that the L2k sounds much better in the mix than all alone. Of course some players can make a tin can sound amazing but for a regular amateur such as myself, the L2k doesn't do it. For build quality and overall finish, you cannot beat the G&L brand. So there you have it. The final truth IMHO. LOL.

Thanks. My comparisons is with exactly the same amp and cab. I understand that some cabs might work better for some basses than others, but I'm trying to understand what's going on in the context of just the L2K. If the bass is that much more mid forward than my other bases, I'll either have to use off board EQ to remedy the situation or get rid of it.

I originally put the GHS Pressurewounds on because they seemed LESS mid-forward than the d'Addario EXL170 rounds that shipped with the bass. I'm really simply looking for a modern, more evenly balanced round wound type sound. Flats are not something I'm interested in here - I have other basses I use for the flat vintage stuff. Just to be clear - GHS Boomers are rounds, right? I've never used them; I also don't know what you mean by round core - is this a variety of GHS string?

The Pressurewounds seem to be more mid-mid to lower mid focused to my ears. The DAs all sound more upper mid to me. Believe it or not the GHS flats don't really make the bass sound vintage. Kind of a thick version of modern maybe. It still has that G&L sound, but more balanced. Speaking of balanced, I'm glad you are going to try the GHS Balanced Nickles. I was going to suggest Fender Pure Nickles. I have a Jazz that has a mid think I don't like. Those give the bass some mid punch without the honk (but it sounds just fine with my secondary cab.

Thread on the Balanced Nickles.
GHS Balanced Nickel strings
These may work well for you. They will have some brightness to them, but tamed. Play them for several weeks before deciding. Post what they do or don't do for you and that will likely help us make suggestions.

Regular GHS Boomers have a hex core (Like D'As do), but the Round core Boomers, or round core anything tends to produce a slightly smoother tone. A little deeper and slightly less middy.

I hope you find the right string. Don't give up till you try several. With my basses some require certain strings to achieve that, "Wow! That's a sound I love" response. But, end the end after experimentation you may find that a G&L just isn't going to work for you and possibly not with your current rigs.

It's so clean!!!

I have its twin. Those first gen SB-2s are really great sounding basses.

I haven't inquired, but I am curious if the seller has had these two basses for years or what because they are both so clean and come with OHSC's as well.

I've followed this seller for a month and know the person who bought his El Toro. If you check his completed items you'll notice prices have gone down and back up. While the L2Ke and El Toro have been legit I'd be wary on this SB2. He mentions it needs a fret leveling but it's condition looks way too clean for much fret wear. I suspect ski jump and the seller may or may not even be aware what that is. Then again, these days I ALWAYS suspect ski jump on a G&L 3-bolt.

That El Toro looks sweet as well, the selling price was the same as the L2KE. I definitely inquired about the neck being straight as it being a 3-bolt and all so hopefully everything is on the up and up.

I don't believe I have both loved and hated a website quite so much as chrisguitars.com.

What's to love about it? It is one of the worst web page designs I've ever seen. Had I not been looking for this particular bass, I would have given up.

You ain't kidding. My eyeballs just joined the hashies-mee-to movement.
