Mutes out ringing strings. They are more common to see on extended range basses.
I love blue with a maple neck. That might be the best g&l I've ever seen

I have a Kiloton Tribute in white with white guard, and I was wondering if anyone who has the Irish Ale version might be interested in swapping guards. I always thought the white would look better with the tort guard, and the Irish Ale would look better with a white guard, and maybe someone else feels the same. Thanks!

I've always thought that G&L had the best looking finishes on their instruments.
My interest in basses has been taking me in many directions the past few months. The last couple years I've been playing MTD Kingston basses but recently have been looking for something different. I played a Stingray the other day and actually really liked the string spacing (I only play 5s nowadays). The roundness of the neck felt good too. I know G&L 5 necks are similar so I've been thinking of trying one out.
My main bass for almost a decade was a USA G&L L2000. I really liked the sound but also wished it were more mellow at times. Looking at the current lineup I'm interested in the M2500. Really wish I could find one to try out but I haven't been able to find one in the San Francisco Bay Area.
So I'm thinking of ordering a M2500 tribute from Guitar Center, this way I can return it if I don't like it. If I dig it, I'll save up for a USA model most likely
I see a lot of comments on the L2500 tribute but not so much on the M2500 tribute. Any owners want to share their thoughts?
I'd also love to try the JB 5, but I don't have the kind of extra dough to try one on a whim

Tribute quality holds true across the line for the ones I have played. Good ones are good. Bad ones are rare, but exist. The Tribute M2500 should be fine. I cannot help beyond that, since I have never owned one. I have a well stocked G&L dealer 5 minutes from my house, so I have played several over the various Tribute generations. The M2500s definitely sound different than the L2500s while maintaining the MFD character. Might be what you are after.
The JB5s feel great and sound like a jazz bass. For feel, I always found my L2500 to be extremely comfortable. The JB5 is right there with it. Feels like my L2500 with a different body shape. The nice part about the Jazz configuration is that there are a lot of options to swap electronics if you are after a different sound than the stock configuration can offer. I liked my JB5 stock. I loved it after a pickup and preamp swap. I wanted active passive and to tame the high end a little.
If you opt for the JB5, you will most likely have to shield the bass. They are known for humming like crazy when your hands are off of the strings. Easily fixed with a little time and shielding tape. However it is also a little annoying that you have to put this work into a bass at this quality level.
As another option... string choice can mellow the L2500 a little. After 15 years of rounds, I switched to flats on my L2500. I doubt it ever sees rounds again.

I noticed that the neck has twisted - when you adjust the E-string side straight, the g-side goes "over", so instead of a relief I've got a hump. Otherwise I could manage with it, but the twist screws up the intonation so that bridge runs out of adjustment room, other strings are ok but the G is far from it. It was used and I got it a while ago so I'm stuck with it.

At one point, G&L was selling Tribute necks in their online store. They all got bought up, but some people might be holding on to some that they bought and willing to let one go.
Otherwise, I've never tried these guys, but I've seen comments that they have done miracles....

While the Tribute series are great basses, I don't think the neck will be as good as the ones on the USA models based on what I know of the build process on the USA models. Here's a couple of videos on the M2000 in general that might help you decide.
Follow up question regarding M2500 tribute vs USA. Are the necks the same shape? I know they are not for the 4 string version but couldn't find info for the 5 strings
@picnic01 I bought my 1st G&L, an M2500 Tribute, a couple of months ago. The neck is everything I want in a 5 string, perfect string spacing (for me) and very comfortable. The M2500 Tribute replaced a 5 string which sounded awesome however the wide string spacing and chunky neck didn't work for me.
I use an Ampeg BA-112 v2 at practice and the first time I brought my new bass to band practice everyone commented on how great the M2500 Tribute sounds. Drummer, guitar player, keyboard player all asked to pick it up and try playing it.
Now that I have some time and familiarity with it, I've learned that small adjustments of the pickup blend knob have impactful tone/texture changes. I tend to run the preamp tone controls flat and, depending on the song, will sometimes bump the mids up to cut through and other times bump the bass to shake the house. The current strings are GHS Pressurewounds. Hope this helps
