so I talked to them about that and yes there are some different configurations you can go...I’m going to go outer for mine...I would imagine the inner might get closer to a Stingray-ish type of tone.
Not so much as you'd think, really. With the outer coils selectable as you're planning, you've got the single coils in the classic J-bass positions and with both selected a version of the J-bass scoop is there. With the inner coils selectable (like my L-2500), you don't get quite so scooped a jazz bass effect, but it's also not the punch-bite of a Stingray either—the coils are farther apart and, well, they're MFDs. I like the positions of the two inner coils when each is run in single coil mode. They're different positions than on my J-basses, but nonetheless quite distinct, bridge vs neck. In particular, the inner (bottom) coil of the neck pickup when used alone emulates the single coil mode on my L-1000 which I quite like.
