G&L Club Part 7

Lately I've been playing a road worn P or a road worn Flea jazz with my band so I don't worry about nicks and scratches. But I decided to use my JB the other night and quickly remembered why this is the bass I will never get rid of. The quality, feel, and tone on this are just top notch. I might need to sell the Flea because I can't see using that when I have this.

Jeez, that quilted maple is stinkin' gorgeous...

Dang it, you guys are stirring up my GAS again. It's been over six months since I last bought a new-to-me bass. I have a Fender Jazz that I really like, so tell me why I should consider a JB to add to the collection? (Disclaimer: I have a SB2 that I really, really like, and a custom-painted L-2000 that I haven't played because of the custom paint - gotta get it clear-coated to protect against my horrid man-arm.) Sell me!

That FJB looks nice, and probably plays nice, too. I don't seem to see an access point to adjust the truss rod, however. What is the country of origin? Is it PLEK'd, like USA G&Ls are? Sometimes, selling is like negative campaigning. I'll switch to positivity: The Bel Air green G&L JB in my photo weighs only 7.8 lbs, and has 1964 holy grail tone stock. Other than the Dunlop strap locks that I put on all instruments, I refuse to mess with perfection. Empress wood is amazing.

Has anyone experimented with swapping out the cap on an LB-100? On my tribute LB-100 that is stock, I wish I could roll off more of the tone (high mids/highs) and get it a bit warmer. On my other LB-100 I swapped in an EMG Geezer with the EMG tone circuit and it is significantly better.

I know they're different animals, but I can get the neck pickup on my jazz bass MUCH warmer than the P pickup on my LB-100. Suggestions/Comments?

I moved from the stock .022uF to a .033uF on my ‘93 a few years ago. With the stock cap, I felt that the bass sounded great with the treble rolled all the way off - and I played it this way often - but it didn’t allow you to go that extra range if you wanted it. I used a .033uF just because that’s what I had on hand; somehow I was short of anything larger at the time. I haven’t felt the need to change it since. It doesn’t get that super muffled tone that my other P with .047uF has, and it retains some clarity when rolled all the way off (barely), but I don’t really ever go to the extreme anymore.

Caps are cheap. Assuming you can solder, experiment and see where it gets you.

You don't have to swap out the cap. Just put another one in parallel with it; the capacitances add. If that added capacitance doesn't give you enough roll-off for your tastes, you can just take the extra cap off.

Last week MF said, based on the PO it was associated with, it would ship 9/28/2019. I did a web chat with them on Monday (10/1/2019) and they said it did not come in. They have NO ETA for it. If/When it ships, I'll let you know.

BTW, this WAS the link the pulled from their site.
