Hey Brent...
Well strange enough ;)...It appears that one of the guitarists that I work with (Joe Feloni) is the latest G&L artist.
The day before NAMM Joe’s band will be playing and doing a NAMM video for Leo Fender at “Live at Leo’s” right there at G&L.
Long story made short, I have to play a G&L for that. Out of repspect to Mike Lull it has to be something different then what He offers.
I was going to go Kilaton, but I’m a rear pickup kind of guy so they are sending me a L2500 to get used to and making me a L2500 (Ash/Ebony) and quite possibly with the K-mod for the performance.

he two-position series / parallel switch gets replaced with a three-position switch that gives you parallel / single coil / series. I think the normal way is to give you the outer coils (that's how mine is), but I thought I've seen people on TB saying theirs gives them the inner coils.

The "K" in the term "K-mod" refers to a Japanese name. IIRC, this capability was originally on G&L basses in Japan, and the "K" stood for a person's name (I don't remember what the name is). But once people started hearing about it and asked about it, it became a factory option.

My bass didn't have it originally, but the previous owner had a neck issue and sent the bass back to G&L to have it replaced. While it was there, he also had them make the K-mod too it. I never really used it until recently, but have been playing with it once in a while and am finding ways to use it now. It's a nice tonal option to have.

Very cool! I have an L2000 custom that came from the factory with the K-mod. It's probably one of the nicest basses I've ever played. I ordered it in 2008. It's a dark clear red with maple fingerboard. Sort of an ode to Geddy's red jazz. :) It came from the factory PLEKd to perfection! I don't play it often enough.

I just modded my beloved SB-2, but instead of the tone option I put a series mode activated by a push-push potentiometer. In series the bass sounds dark and huge, and a bit more modern. I made a clip with the raw recording so you can hear the volume difference between the 3 modes (Both PU - Neck only - Series).

I didn't know what to expect since this mod is almost always performed on jazz bass configs. The result is a very pleasant surprise to say the least, and makes this instrument even more polyvalent. Btw this is the schematic I used (just ignore the tone pot) :

In order to put-off cleaning the kitchen, I'm submitting an update after my earlier JB5 fretboard radius question.

To my surprise, GC had a used lefty JB5, so I gave it a shot.

I didn't notice anything significant about the different radius, and I liked the tighter string spacing. But this confirmed that I'm still fine without a 5-string. I played a Streamer LX 5 from 1998-2010 and made good use of the low-B. But, things change; trends, personal preference, technique, arthritis, etc.
Plus, this JB5 was in rough shape, especially for an instrument that couldn't be more than three years old.

So, since I have been eyeing it for quite a while, this is headed SW from Blacksburg, VA. I have a feeling we'll get along just fine.

so I talked to them about that and yes there are some different configurations you can go...I’m going to go outer for mine...I would imagine the inner might get closer to a Stingray-ish type of tone.

I wired it up and it was out of phase (thin/nasally) so i reversed the north wires and it sounded fantastic. Series worked, north coil worked, parallel, not so much. In parallel mode, the south coil was shorted out and basically was the same as the middle north coil position. I treated the black/copper as the bare ground.

Then I used my google-fu and found this diagram

So I used the series/north coil/parallel one, and all three settings appeared to work as all coils seemed to be working based on what i switched, and the tones did vary enough to suggest they were working, however the output was 1/2 what the above setting was. It wasn't out of phase as it still had a lot of bass, but the output/volume was way low, crazy low and I know these MFD's are hot pickups so I knew something had to be wrong.

Anyways, thats where I'm at and would appreciate any suggestions.

Just wanted to circle around back on this...

I finally got it working...I got sidetracked with a thunderbird for a bit...;)

If all my readings were correct, which is doubtful, the ground is attached/related to the North Coil, so I wired it all up according to that. The switches are Parallel/North/Series with the last switch being a kill/mute switch. It's also wired VVT and has a treble bleed mod on both volumes.

I really, really like the tones from this bass! Especially the neck in single coil soloed and the bridge single soloed with some bass added.

Parallel is my 2nd favorite with series being last, but they are all useful and sound good.

Someone said here that these pickups do not need any help from a preamp and I am inclined to agree at this point. The VVT plus the splitting really opens up the amount of useful tones available on this bass. Those MFD pickups are fantastic...
