The SB is such a great bass. You're going to notice the widening of the neck more with a J-width nut than with a wider nut me-thinks.

Thanks! I was comparing same G&L neck profiles with 1.5” nut but the bound one flares more. Its about 1/4” wider at the 12th. No big deal, but I could tell before I confirmed with science (ruler).
Yep I love the SB-2 especially with a tone control. I still liked the one I had without, but with it is even better. They should be standard.
Me too! Then I play my L5000 and think... yep they totally should do this again with normal string spacing and a bridge pickup.

Is that 2 x 1/8" of binding on either side, or 1/4" of added actual fingerboard width? It's certainly curious if it's the latter.
I added a tone control to mine with stacked volumes. The way that bass works re: changing character with volume level, it's one of those rare instances where two volumes and a tone is more satisfying than volume/blend/tone.

Seems like it's a combination. Since both necks start off at 1.5" at the nut, and the bound one is 1/4" wider at the 12th, I expect it gets even wider at the heel since it's a straight line.

I bought Tony Black's L2500 Tribute in "honey burst" although he's right it looks more like trans-orange, at the end of September cause I was missing having a 5 string. I've previously owned a US L2500, L2k, and 2 ASATs. Nice having a G&L again. Dollar for dollar, Tributes are hard to beat. My first G&L Tribute. Hand picked for Tony by the G&L guys.

Well, I went to go pick up my "Fair" condition L-2500 Tribute this afternoon from GC. Long story short - it was far, far below it's listed "Fair" condition. A couple of quarter-sized dings down to bare wood on it. Small chunk of wood missing from around the truss rod access hole. Two non-original knobs and a missing 3rd knob on the Bass/Passive Tone knob - which by the way didn't work at all.
It was a complete disaster - I thanked them, but politely refused acceptance of that mess. I left it there on the counter I got my full money back including shipping.
Driving home from GC empty handed and extremely disappointed, I called up American Music Supply & ordered a brand new L-2500 in Redburst - overnight was only like $50 dollars so I said "let's do it". It'll be here tomorrow. I think I'll be happier all the way around with a brand new one.

Not to spend your money for you, but there is an 'excellent condition' 1989 L5000 on Reverb right now that appears to actually be in excellent condition from the pictures. I am surprised is still there. Been there about 3 weeks at what I think is a very reasonable price for an L5000. No affiliation.
I love mine. String spacing is definitely tighter than other G&Ls. I don't find it quite as comfortable as my other G&Ls, but it is still comfortable. I bought mine from the classifieds in 2013. Pretty sure I bought it off of Craig B.
