Unless you need financing, your better off calling Greg @ Rocket music. I have had multiple email exchanges with Ben at Sweetwater this week . They are bound to the same G&L internet pricing structure as anyone else. He was also more wanting to "sell" me rather than "help" me . I'm sure that's his job and he provides this service very well . Greg otoh gave me a personalized Bass building experience and was very patient with me making "last minute " changes and decisions. Rocket music wants your business and it shows . Sweet water does too , but you and your order will just be another number with them .
However , you simply cannot beat their ability to help out if you need your New G&L financed . That is what you get in trade for "personal " service in your build . Not bad by any means , just a different experience. IMO

Thanks, as I mentioned in a previous post, Greg gave me the cheapest quote so far. Bass Central was almost the same, just 10 dollars more.

I'm really just asking Sweetwater out of curiosity, I doubted they would give the best price. I'm not a fan of financing instruments personally (not to knock those that do, just not my thing).

Greg's awesome. If I ever get ready to order a custom G&L he'll be my first call.

Sweetwater is good at what they do; and over the past 5 - 6 years they have become my first go-to for music items as GC stores are a frustrating experience.

Beautiful bass. That headstock looks really nice.

SB-2 is a tone monster. The two pickups really compliment each other. Neck pickup seems darker to me than a p-bass. The bridge pickup has more growl than a j-bass.

What do you think of the p-bass pickup compared to a normal p-bass pickup? It doesn't sound the same to me. Much more growly and dark.

I never owned a Fender P....but from what i hear, i agree with that.....dark growl.

Many (most?) don't even use the preamp but just run it passive since the pickups are so hot. I took my battery out on day one. No suggestions on a replacement though.

Are there any DIY pickup wizards in this thread? I'm wondering about making my own "split coil" MFD by buying a soap bar off the G&L site, unwinding it, cutting the magnets in half, and rewinding it so you've got E and A on one magnet and D&G on the other, and I don't have to carve up my L2K's body because I'm preserving the soapbar's form factor. Is this even possible?

I won't try doing that, the wire is so thin even looking at it causes it to break immediately. And cutting a magnet is almost impossible without destroying it... But maybe you could buy a split MFD and hide it in a humbucker case ?

I thought of that but the split MFD is just a little too wide.

I could add a pick guard to the bass (one cutout shape for the original pickup and another for the MFD) but then we are into body mods. I could also just buy a SB-2 but I'm rather attached to this bass....

The custom pickguard sounds like an easy solution, maybe attaching it with double-sided tape would avoid drilling hole in the body ?

I took mine out and wired it VVT with switches for parallel/north coil/series. The last switch is a mute now. I'm not big into onboard preamps anyways and i wanted the individual control over each pickup.
