I keep coming back to this too... so I gotta use my own ears through my rig with the same strings. Now that my GHS precision flats are on it, its a RADICALLY different warm bass. With nickels it was super aggressive. With my MIA P I could steels on, it was NEVER aggressive. So to me the LB-100 is more versatile & can fit into more projects by changing strings.

In fact, same strings... the LB-100 is much more clear & aggressive than my Rosewood Big Al SSS. Now of course the Big Al SSS is way more versatile without changing strings. Between the 2 basses I cover almost all the ground I would need & each one can be a backup for the other for ANY project. Sometimes a MIA P just was not a fit

I picked up a used 2012 L2500 a few months ago, so I may very well already have much of what an L1005 or L5000 would provide and maybe a little more. I do like narrow string spacing.

Thanks for the information and compare and contrast review. Good to know before I commit.

I could still go for a 5 string version of an LB 100.

Basically, yes. The SB-2 pickup is an MFD pickup and won't even fit in a standard P bass split coil pickup hole.

OTOH, I believe the LB-100 pickup is the standard P pickup size.

wrench45us - Although I'm all 4-stringer these days IMO yes, if you've got an L2x00 then you have pretty much what you get from an L100x. Especially if you have K-switching on the L2x00 for single coil. OMG is a little different than series but the same neighborhood (I'm still comparing L2000s to L1000s to decide if it's a big enough difference to modify one of my L1000s).

My memory of the L5000 is foggy but I remember thinking it sounded like an SB-1 (I was comparing to SB-2s, so like an SB2 without the bridge pickup). I've always felt that compared best to an L-series neck pickup in parallel mode active - although not exact.


SlugThrower - I'm with you (albeit on the 4-string plane). I think my L-series are about the most boring looking basses on the planet. They are modern so not even a control plate. The only ones more boring to me are JB2s/MJ4s with smaller pickups. Give me a Stingray, classic Sabre, or Jazz/JB with control plate and pickguard for looks. But give me an L-series for sound, when I'm playing it I'm not looking at it :)

I have not been able to find any picture of a G&L L-2500 Premium (Japan/Rakuten) with a pickguard, in my Google search. Is it possible that pickguards are only for L-2000s, in Japan?

By the way, in Japan, most G&L L-2500 Premium still have a 4+1 headstock (is 3+2 an option?) and it also seems that all L-2x00s have standard from factory the coil tapping option with a 3-way mini-toggle switch.

My two L-2500s have burst finishes on them: one is a black burst with maple FB, the other is a green burst with maple FB and scraped paint binding. I think it makes up for the "boring" aspect. However, I would love to have a pick guard on any other finish, like a clear gloss, flat white, or even a transparent red or green! Anyway, G&L has so many cheap and awesome custom options when you order a bass from them, why not add pick guards to the option? Also, my custom ordered 2500s all arrived in less than two months!

Well, dang! I have (obviously) never tried it myself. I thought I had read where someone else did and the MFD was too big.
