G&L Club Part 7

probably.
I can deal with a wider suede back strap way more readily than a 10lb bass.

I have a 7.5lb 5 string active JJ that does just fine, but, it does have hipshot ultralight tuners

here's the link to the bass place MJ5. Nice price, empress wood, reat light weight.
I'm not quite liquid enough right now or I'd maybe hit that.

Invalid Link Removed

Maybe the reason I never found it searching for one is "it's web address shows it as a 1500."
maybe not though, what do I know.

This makes a total of 3 I've ever found, two from rocket, and this one.

Oh man. Close call. I just saw the "1500" and "Empress wood" and quickly thought there was a link to an Empress wood L1.5k. That's my recent GAS attack. Well, a light L1500, that is.

PHEW! Glad that that link is not to a light L1500. That would be bad. Very, very bad.

Hmm....just how very, very badly do you want one? ;)

Well don't get too excited about that claimed weight. That's the bassplace in AZ, right? I'd be very surprised if they aren't exaggerating a wee bit.

The weight is in G&L's list of pieces available to dealers. Please see below their leftover empress wood basses (posted a week ago by Greg of Rocket Music here: http://www.talkbass.com/threads/latest-g-l-arrivals.1035347/page-3 post #52):

A half pound difference between a MJ-4 and a MJ-5 (the Bass Place one), is that odd ? I bought a brand new US M-2500 from The Bass Place 2 years ago, and there are only nice chaps there, in addition to offering unbeatable prices.

That LB-100 with tort is torturing me... :rage: :( :***: day and night...

Not talking about Rocket, talking about the MJ5 at the bassplace, which is not on the list you posted. Serial # CLF072122.

If the claimed weight was from G&L or Rocket I'd believe it. But not from bassplace. I bought my brand new MJ4 from them. They touted it as "weighing an incredible 8.2 lbs!" In reality the bass weighs exactly 8.75 lbs on my very accurate shipping scale. Still a good enough weight for my tastes, but not what they claimed.

In addition, the bass turns out to have a finish flaw, which they made no mention of in the ebay listing description, nor was it mentioned when I spoke with them on the phone prior to buying the bass. The paint on half of the headstock does not fully cover the primer. Probably a factory second or "blem". I suspect that's why they insisted that we do the deal outside of ebay. No chance for potential feedback problems that way.

They also pulled a fast one on me a decade ago on a Genz combo.

What I'm saying is that outfit specializes in blems, seconds, show demos, etc., but are not always up front about it. Caveat emptor.

I understand your case. EBay is one thing, but can't you claim G&L's warranty for your MJ-4 (brand new means it was first hand)?
The US M-2500 I bought from them through ebay was flawless, brand new (I believe), and at under a grand. I re-sold it after 2 years.

No, I bought it brand new, with full warranty, which I registered with G&L.

Just because an item is sold on ebay doesn't preclude it from being brand new with warranty. Don't know where you got that notion.

So, what was the outcome with G&L, did you send it back to them or to the bass place to fix the issue?

There is no outcome, it's a spectacular bass despite the finish flaw. No way am I sending it back to G&L to wait months. Nor do I wish to deal any further with bassplace, as I expect they'd fob me off again like they did with the Genz amp. If that were to happen I'd be so aggravated that I'd have to dump the bass. As it stands, I can live with it. I also got it for under a grand, so that takes away some of the sting.

Here's the bass, check out the great flamage on the quartersawn neck.

Here is the flawed headstock paint. Lower half, and near the truss access port. Needed another coat of paint.

Fwiw- I bought a JB from Grapevine Guitar and it had the very same issue on the painted headstock. Also the neck was really rough on the back like the forgot to sand it before they applied the oil. It wast insanely heavy so I sent it back (the story of my life).

Only done 3 or 4 transactions with The Bass Place over the last 20 years but they've always done right by me.

This is well known about those guys, they had an issue with fender flame maple special editions being blems advertised as new.

Interesting, I saw they had a sunburst one a while back. Is that the one you picked up? I'd be interested in checking out the M-2000, do you know what color it is? They show a G&L guitar on the listing.

Checked out the M-2000 today, still there, and it's mint.
Red burst with a maple board.
didn't have my phone on me or I would have got you some pics.

It plays really nice too. Straight neck, low action.

Still a fantastic looking bass. I have a JB with similar issues. Paint missing around the truss access hole, some paint not neat enough on the edge.

The approach to a painted headstock is being missed by G&L. Ive had other instruments with matching headstocks that looked much neater. What helps blend in the paint lines is a gloss finish of the headstock front to back. My musciman in black sparkle was finished like that with a line in the back of the neck right around the area where the nut is.

I hope the MJ that I have coming will be nice and neat.
