G&L Club Part 7

Greg of Rocket Music is on here and if you message him he will give you the TB price. He quoted me some fantastic prices and knows G&L ordering for custom options if you go that way. I just bought a bass he had in stock and he was fabulous to deal with.

Greg at Rocket is my choice too. He's got a great relationship with the factory and his prices are the best I've found.

I've read on a few different G&L posts that a strong dealer is most important in conveying your exact order to the factory and then standing up for you if any mistakes were made. Apparently anything special order has risks attached.

I have a radius question. The most comfortable neck that I have is a SB-2 Trib. (I pictured it here several times). Looking around at the specs on the net, it seems that it has a 12 radius. However, it seems most USA models come with a standard 7.5 radius, according to the website.

For those of you who have tried both, have you felt a huge difference? I'm just wondering if it is worth the upcharge. I know this is a personal thing. Have some of you compromised on this felt that it was a bad move?

The standard fingerboard radius is 9.5" for all current 4 string USA basses.

I've had 7.5, 9.5, and 12 inch radius G&L bass necks and I don't really feel a huge difference. My favorite is the classic #6 that was the narrow option for basses up until around 1998. They then made the 12" radius standard for basses until about 6-7 years ago, when 9.5" became standard.
I've found necks of all 3 radii that were very comfortable and some of each radius that weren't comfortable. For me, the rounding of the edges and the back contour are much more important to me than the radius in terms of how much I like a neck, at least within the 7.5-12" range.

A big second on rounding of the edges & back contour. I've had some G&L's and Laklands that were cut so steep they feel like they're almost cutting into my hand. Thankfully most have a nice rounder feel.

I assume it's a maple board? For some reason a good number of older G&L basses with maple boards had much sharper edges. Those were sort of 1 piece necks due to the Bicut construction. Maple board necks back then didn't have separate fingerboards, once they changed the neck construction then all fingerboards were glued on.

I'm not sure why that led to sharper edges but I definitely saw a correlation.

Yup. I'm no luthier, but that seems to describe mine.

My MJ-4 has the 1 and 5/8" 12 radius neck and my L2K has the 1 3/4" 12
radius neck. Both feel great to me.

I'm unsure the radius on my SB-2. It's not a 12.

I notice nut width and neck depth far more than fretboard radius.
