Hey everyone - really been liking DR Fat Beams on my L2000, but thinking of trying a string that has the same feel but slightly mellower top.
What are opinions on either Sun Beams or D'Addario NYXLs to get this done? I like what I read about the NYXLs but a few people are saying they end up sounding "bland".

You might try a coated SS string like the Black Beauties or Dragon Skins. (I've heard good things about Elixirs, too, but have no firsthand experience.) I just took a set of Fat Beams off my L2k last week and have had Black Beauties on it before, and I think the BBs might give you what you're looking for.
Another option is half rounds. I switched Fat Beams out in favor of D'Addario half rounds, and that was a definite improvement. I like the lower strings a lot, but the G-string is a bit tinny. I'm hoping to learn to *technique* a better tone out of that string, or that the tinniness ages out (I'm one of those weirdos who likes dead rounds).

When I was stringing my Ls with rounds, Fat Beams were my string of choice. I’ve tried Sunbeams, and thought they were a little thinner on the low end, and that they were bright, but their high end peak was a little lower and less brittle sounding than the Fat Beams. The Fat Beams, to me, sounded better broken in and as they died off. I’m normally not a “dead rounds” kind of guy, but I think the Fat Beams sound best when they’re getting to that stage. The Sunbeams found a better home on a J bass. No experience with the NYXLs.
I'd second this. For many years I was using Dean Markley Blue Steel strings as my stock rounds, that is until they altered contruction of the strings and quality control faded. DR Pure Blues are a very nice substitute and represent a warm, harmonic-rich round that works well with MFD pickups. They've been on my L2500 for some years now and are very satisfying. The only proviso I'd have on them is that there's more noise from the strings when sliding fingers along them than I'd really like.

I have been a big fan of the DR Pure Blues as well.
Hi all, I have an L-2000 probably dated late 90s early 2000s and I absolutely LOVE the way it plays except the sound is unusable
When I plug it in it is super zingy; every note I play has a high overtone and even if I tap on it it rings a bit in the high registry
The isolation work is also a mess with sometimes even radio signals being heard!
I am not sure if the issue is the preamp or the ultra high output of the pickups. I heard older versions of the preamp were not great
I will shield the cavity but I also have 3 options:
- replace the preamp with a new version from G&L
- replace both preamp and pickups with new G&L ones
- replace pickups and preamp with some custom made
what do you think? Anyone had the same issue?

I would start with shielding and putting foam on the pickup springs. Those springs were known for creating “zing” when not foamed. Audible when playing, worse when tapping pickups.
Try lowering your pick ups and/ or volume just a touch MFD's are very hot.
Yeah, I would shield first and that might be the end of it. My only gripe with G&L, the total lack of shielding.

i have sometimes eliminated the springs entirely, and replace with cut off pieces of a cymbal mute made from thick, soft but dense neoprene rubber (think wetsuit material) old school mousepad / keyboard heel rests are similar.
Actually, that's what is under many of the pickups in my basses upun replacement or disassembly.
