G&L Club Part 7

I always (always) said you had good taste, Rob. Good taste indeed.

Thanks my friend! All credit on this L2000 goes to our buddy Lee who spec'd it out and ordered it. Having fun finding those cool tones it has from a Wal to a jazz bass.

Random G&L based pickup question.

I'm thinking of putting a G&L MFD P in a PJ bass that will have a master volume, blend and tone knob. It will be replacing an EMG GZR PJ set up. I'm thinking it will be the G&L MFD P and a Dimarzio Model J as I don't want to route the bass for the G&L bridge single coil.

I know the go-to pot values for a PJ setup are 250k volume, blend and tone pots with a .047uf cap (please excuse my absolute ignorance when it comes to wiring, terminology etc.). Baring in mind the Dimarzio schematics usually suggest 500k pots for volume for both the Model P and Model J what values would work best for the combo of pickups I'm thinking of?

I typically play rock and pop with a pick with some always on mild overdrive and compression. With the EMG PJ set I'm currently running the tone down as much as 50% to get a tone I really like (vintage pick played with overdrive) - I'm not into super bright, and if I really need that tone I go for my L2000 but every now and then I'd like to have something mildly bright.

Also - before someone asks - I realise the perfect P for the Model J is the Model P - I think I like the tone and output of the MFD P better, hence I'm going down that route first :-)

I would go with 250K. I did a P/MFD and it was plenty bright with 250K pots.

NBD!

12.5 weeks later, and she’s arrived. UPS delivered it to the wrong house on Friday and sent me into a straight panic. It said delivered and signed for, but it wasn’t at my house! The sweet old lady two blocks up called me Saturday morning and basically saved me from a heart attack. I LOVE this bass. It’s so fat and beefy and super responsive. It plays fast and smooth and it’s as comfortable as could be. I’m officially a G&L fan boy for life. Oh...and the empress body? Worth it!

Quick plug for Greg and Rocket Music. Super nice guy, amazing service, quick responses, and very informative. I’ll be going through him and Rocket from now on.

That’s a beautiful bass, Congrats!
I absolutely LOVE the GL blocked fretboards without the neck bindings.
(Never been a fan of bound necks.)

That L1000 is beautiful!
I was honestly a bit taken aback when i first unpacked it!
That Belair Green is intense in person, and rather difficult to photograph the color correctly.
It ends up looking more turquoise in photos.
I restrung it with some lighter gauge rw strings, oiled the fretboard, and swapped out the knobs for some black ones last Friday.

I agree! I wanted to start a bit of a personal trend. My #1 player since 2013 was a Lakland DJ5. Bound, blocks, matching headstock. So that’s where I started when putting this together. But I saw a few G&L builds without the binding and I loved the look. I think I made the right choice!

Thanks! I’m loving it a lot!
I’m also trying to resist the urge to replace all the chrome hardware with black. (Black lollipop Hipshot tuners would be pretty freaking awesome i think.) Wondering if GL even makes black bridges currently.
Edit-i adjusted color on that pic. This is a more true to life hue.

Not sure but I agree with the tuners. Those would be killer! But don’t do it unless you can switch all the hardware to black! Maybe chrome lollipops to hold you over? Haha

Dang guys! You make it harder and harder for a guy currently trying to find a JB5 , not to call Greg !
I'm almost all in for the Empress.....Almost LOL!!

In case you're concerned about balance, I was too, until I received it and was thrilled to find that it balances as well as any of my other basses. I don't have a super accurate scale, but by the bathroom scale method (holding vs not holding) mine weighs around 8.2 lbs.
