I'm selecting Paulownia (empress) for a couple future builds.
I built a "J shaped object" 5 string bass recently that weighs 7Lbs 3oz .
Will be nice for 4 hour gigs when i have them again.

I tried flats on my SB-1. mellower, but not mellow enough for me. So I listed it for sale. when it didn't sell, I swapped pickups to Lollars and its a keeper now (for me and my needs). That's what I did, not recommending that for anyone, just the process I went through.
I’ve used all those sets on various basses. I really love the pure blues set about the best of the 3.
I was going to put a set of pressurewounds on my L1k,but opted for a low gauge set of d’addario rw 170s instead. They sound pretty reasonably mellow on that bass. Full disclosure,my L1k has an alnico pickup in place of the usual MFD.
Not a JB, but, I have Pressurewounds currently on my P-Bass. I think they sound pretty good. Louder output than the Sunbeams I had on previously. There is a bit of a strange metallic-y upper-mid/treble tone. It disappears in a mix but sounds a little strange solo'd. The metallic sound is similar to the Cobalt Slinky's if you have experience with those.
"Mellow" on an SB1 is called an LB-100. You won't get that change with strings but FWIW Sunbeams are "mellower" than Pure Blues, which I have on more basses than all other strings combined. If you want mellower
swap out the pickup to the G&L alnico or some other. The 1/8"- 1/4" spacing difference between the models (I've found SB's can vary up to 1/8") from the bridge is sonically minuscule compared to swapping the pickups. Tried it both ways.
Thank you, that's helpful. I am aware of the difference between the alnico and the MFD, and what the MFD will do to the sound, but imagine I will want to be feeding it something a bit less jangly than the stock Daddarios (which I'm playing at the moment on my Yamaha). Sunbeams seem the best place for me to start.
For what it's worth I'm a DR fanboy - but I find that initially Sunbeams are quite bright and "bitey" for nickel rounds.
They do settle down and last a long time, but to get there I feel they need to be played in a week or two before the jangle goes away.
In my opinion and experience D'Addario NYXLs have a little less jangle out of the packet. Good sounding string to my ears, round core as per Sunbeams (equals more flexible, slightly less tension), and the difference is small but I don't think they age as well as Sunbeams.
All just my 2c worth but I totally get what you are trying to achieve @Ricky Rioli .

I just picked up an L-2500. I like it, but is has an odd sound. I think it may just be the G&L sound; very middy and growly. It’s not big and thick sounding. Any way to make it more “vintage” sounding besides just passive mode?

You've already changed the strings to tapewounds or flatwounds?
Hey man - what sort of basses are you coming from? I'm a stainless rounds user, but I can get serious low end vintage thump in series mode with the treble dialed back. It still has some G&L muscle and clank but plenty (maybe too much?) low end. I'm thinking something else is going on here.
Tell us your whole set up.....strings, switch positions, bass/treble knob positions etc.
