I'm in my 50s now. I can have more toys. I wish I could give just one of those basses to the young bassist that I was in my teens or 20s, when I was poor and could not afford them. Funny how life works.
You know...maybe the one with the maple top cap is snappier just because it is. What I mean is that some basses are just brighter and snappier. It may not have to do with the construction, but rather the fact that this bass is just like that.
I just find it interesting because my other ones are really eerily similar, at least to my ears.

I've been playing about a year on my only EB, a PJ Yamaha bb434. Looking down the road to bass #2, I think an L2000 would give me a wide range of tones not available on a PJ. Is the L2k a good option for tonal expansion ? I haven't played one yet but I love everything I've seen and heard about G&L basses. My budget would probably limit me to a Tribute, bought new do I can pay it off over time.
you can pretty routinely find used L2000s for near new Tribute kinda money. Used Tributes are tremendous value if you can be patient
I got my Tribute L2K used for under $400. I'm still figuring it out, but I have to say it's a nicer bass than my MIM Fender.

I buy almost all my instruments used, have picked up quite a few here on TB classifiesds, some on Craigslist. Here recently Reverb has become a regular source to check.
G&L's are fine instruments and are high quality; but for buying new the price depreciation is significant.
Is this tonal difference noticeable when played acoustically?
Do you have the same strings on all of them?

Gotta weigh in on the shielding discussion of a page or two ago: I have never had a hum problem with my now-gone Tribby JB-2, or my current pair of USA JB-2s (but I did put 'buckers in 'em). No hum issue with my bone stock USA JB, and I gigged it in one of the oldest venues in my area (dating back to 1896). Maybe I have been lucky.

Yes, all the same strings on them. I'm weird that way...I like the same feel and tone on all my basses. Otherwise, it gets a little wild to figure out what is actually going on, if the tone changes.
But the question about playing them acoustically...I never thought of that, thanks for pointing it out. I took them out and did that. Low and behold, the one with the maple tone cap resonated the least against my body but the notes were definitely louder and snappier when played unamplified. Which really makes me think that the difference is in the construction or the body materials, not the pickups. Which kinda makes sense...I would think the pickups from the same model are all pretty similar, unless there is a defect.
I haven't heard from anyone here who has a maple tone cap on the thread...there must be some. If you are out there, I'd love to hear you chime in.

That's a great collection of basses, @jfh2424! I especially like the cherryburst/maple (my L-2500 is cherryburst/maple) and the honeyburst (love that flamed maple top!), but they're all beautiful!

Yeah, cherryburst is one of my favorite finishes by G&L. Mine is a nice one...there are other equally nice ones out there, too.
Another favorite of mine has been honeyburst. However, there seems to be a pretty wide variation on this type of finish, from what I've seen. Or maybe it is just difficult to photograph. I don't know. I haven't seen too many in person.
G&L just has awesome finishes, I have to say. Addictive stuff.

Agreed. Especially their metal flake finishes. I'm really a burst fan (all five of my basses are sun, cherry, and honey bursts) but I don't any other manufacturer does a metal flake finish as well as G&L.
