G&L Club Part 7

For those of you that have had Music Man Sting Rays (single humbucker model), which G&L basses do you think do the best job of approximating that Sting Ray sound?

Honestly, none. I think the closest is my L2000 in single coil mode with both pickups on to get that scoop and a bit of sharpness, but it's still far off.

I had an L1500 (single MFD humbucker in the ~Stingray position) and it did not sound like a Stingray. I don't think a Kiloton does, either.

I agree, I've owned 2 L-1500's and a L-1505 and I didn't think any of them sounded like a stingray. I think the pickups and preamp are so different that I'm not sure there is a G&L that gets really close to a stingray sound. L-2000 has the most options and probably would get the closest.

Hey all: I am going to try an "excellent" condition used JB-2 at my local GC later today. Any known issues with that model I should be looking for? I know to check the fret-ends and for dead spots, but don't really know what else to look out for.

Jazz basses in particular, either sing to you or they mumble. Make sure this one sings.

Don't want to be overbearing,but just received the LB100 Cherry Burst this morning. It had been sitting over at UPS,since Thursday morning. Instead of waiting until this evening I live close to t

he hub,and asked if I could pick it up there. So it is now in my possession! Not that cold but still letting it acclimate to room temperature.

Their used site had a cherry burst American one that is listed as excellent, but someone has butchered the headstock to get rid of the hook. I'd probably avoid that one. Otherwise, nothing I can think of. Like @Holdsg said, if it sings...

I would look at the neck to make sure it has no twists in it. That you can't really fix. Other than that, does it sound good, do the knobs do what they're supposed to do and most importantly, do you feel like you must...have...it!

I like the white pickup cover. It's a subtle touch but it's different enough (since most pickup covers are black) to give it a distinctive look. Very nice!

Highly unlikely you'll find a G&L with fret ends sticking out (at least on a USA model).

Dead spots (fifth fret on G string) are pretty common. I wouldn't let that turn me off too much. My three G&Ls have it to varying degrees.

I always just do the standard stuff. Sight the neck to make sure it's not bowed in some way that can't be adjusted out. Fret up and down the neck to see if there's any obvious issues.

But yea, as the other poster said, how does it sound to you? I can't play a bass that just doesn't sound right to me. You know pretty quickly when you pick it up. Nice you can play it too.

On my SB-2, I absolutely love DR Fat Beams. Thick bottom, a little stainless crunch up top.

Sooo...yeah, there was a reason that was priced at $359. It was sure not in "excellent" condition. The fret-ends were sticking out all along the fretboard; some of the frets were pitted. And the control knobs were very hard to turn and would bind at certain points in the rotation.

*reaching out* I got a Tribute JB body in Turquoise mist that I'm going to build out.
If anyone has a neck for a G&L JB DM /\/\3.
Also it appears that a standard import Jazz neck "should" fit, can anybody confirm?

Wow. Even the Tributes I've played have been fine basses. That one was had led some sort of bad life I guess.

As someone else pointed out a new JB2 Tribute is only a bit more.
