Calling the neck roll “generous” is, well, generous!

I'm just quoting the specs!

Medium C 1½”

Nut width traditional to a J bass, Leo brought it with him to Fender Avenue for the ASAT Bass and SB-2.

1½” nut width, generous edge roll, and medium taper from 0.820” at 1st fret to 0.920” at 12th fret.

These specs were part of the #6 and #8 necks.

I just sold my Tribute ASAT Special in the classifieds. It sounded great (like an American ASAT Special) and was well built. My buddy had an American one. Like with G&L basses versus Tribute build quality and materials are better on the US models but sound is mostly the same.

I sold it because my left hand did not agree with the neck profile. As a result I rarely played it and always played my wider necked acoustic. Replaced the ASAT with a Godin Summit Classic CT HB. If my hand agreed with the neck, I would have happily kept it.

Have you ever had the chance to A/B the neck profiles from an USA to a Tribute ASAT?

I have not. I started playing right around the time my friend got rid of his US ASAT (pictured below because it was beautiful) and I have not ventured out to try guitars since COVID started. I suspect that I would prefer the neck for most of the US ASATs neck options compared to the Tribute. My problem with the Tribute was that the guitar felt too narrow at the nut. It looks like only US neck with the same nut width as the Tribute is the Slim C. The two Godin's I have now are 1.6875" and 1.72" at the nut. Noting that nut width is not the only important neck dimension, but in this case I do believe it was the one giving me trouble.

I find that I have no discomfort changing neck sizes/shapes/string spacing/scale length on a bass and do so pretty routinely. I certainly prefer some setups over others, but am comfortable playing on most of them that I have tried playing for any extended period of time. For guitar I struggled (both getting my hand in position and with a little bit of pain) with bar chords near the nut with the Tribute ASAT neck profile. I have had no problem with either on my Godin Summit Classic or A6 Ultra.

I couldn't get on with the J pickup so wired mine as an SB-1 and love it.

Has anyone A/B'd an SB-1 with an SB-2 running the neck pickup only? Pickup and location appear to be identical to me so they should, in theory, sound the same. Anyone confirm that? I always found it interesting that the HH Stingray with the bridge pup soloed sounded very different than the standard H 'ray.

You mean the *bridge* pickup soloed?

Yes. Sometime around ‘99-‘00, they moved to a 6-bolt neck, and the neck pocket is a little deeper, longer neck heel, and with that change, the upper curve of the belly cut got deeper.

Buy all four. Swap the two maple necks for the two rosewood. Then swap the pickguards:
Sunburst, tort, rosewood.
Black, black, rosewood.
Pink, white, maple.
Orange, pearloid, maple.
Sell the other three for MSRP to three grateful purchasers.

EDIT: or just wait for the factory to put the wrong neck on one
