G&L Club Part 7

Cool man - appreciate the answer and your description fits the bill. My L2000 basses just can't be beaten in a live mix, but recording them as I've found is a slightly different challenge with their high output and aggressive tone.

The anti-flabby comment has definitely got me interested. The EB Cobalt flats were nice and tight out of the box. they do have a weird smell, but after only a few gigs I found they went a little flabby acoustically. Amped they still sounded great, but the feel and the smell put me off a bit.

Those cobalt strings react with *some* players’ hand chemistry and discolour fingers/smell odd: the rounds more than the flats.

BTW, if you turn down the volume on the L-series basses, say to about 70%, they still have plenty of output but become less agressive, more refined. You’ll really notice this in recordings. The volume control is very much also a tone control on the L-series and SB basses.

Of the three, I think the SB-2 is the most string-friendly bass I've ever come across. Every one I've had seemed to like every type of strings I threw at them, including TI's of course they always sound good.

My MJ-4 only seemed to like TI Jazz Rounds, real fussy bass string-wise for my tastes. The MJ4 is broken now, so I'll transfer those great strings to another bass. The TI flats get all the praise around here but their Jazz rounds are equally impressive, both sound-wise and playability-wise. Not cheap but worth the price.

Why don't you try the TI's on all 3 basses to decide which bass deserves to wear them? :thumbsup:

Have you tried Fender stainless flats yet? I really like them, they have a strong fundamental along with a nice hint of bright zing. Nice round tone with good presence. Not expensive either!

Those strings can sound very nice on active J-basses generally, so likely there.

I put them on the MJ-4 this morning. I already like them. They have a very soft feel. I had to release a little tension on the truss rod (coming from a set of medium D'addario XLs) too.

Tone wise they seem very balanced. I almost always run the mids up on this bass and the TIs seem to fill in some of that both pickups on mid scoop.

Strings are so individual aren't they? I tried the Chromes this summer and they ended up on a Squier 70s jazz. I'm unsure if they "break in", but they're so rigid out of the package that I had trouble warming to them.

That's a good plan! I decided to try them on my MJ-4 first. So far, really liking them.

Sounds like the rounds would be worth a try too.

Man, waiting for a bass is no joke. I found a good Cyber Monday deal on a JB-2 pre-order. They don't have an actual lead time yet, but said it's typically 3-5 weeks. Hoping it will get here by early to mid January. This will be my first G&L bass, and only my second J Bass since my initial bass. I am both excited and being crushed by the wait (lol, crushed by the weight... unintentional homophone).

Oh my...Tribute or USA? I've been scouring the net for a USA JB 2 that I might like...haven't found one.

I'm stymied so I thought I check with you guys before I tear out what's left of my hair.
I've got an L2K (in the photo) that has a buzz centered around C (most noticeable on G5, but also on on D10.
It's not fret buzz as near as I can tell - I'm pretty good at setups and I've just spent the last hour trying everything in that domain. The source seems to be somewhere on/at the body. It's not my pickguard - took that off thinking it might be the problem. The buzz is audible with the bass not being plugged in.

Any ideas where to look next? This is nuts.
