G&L Club Part 7

I'm stymied so I thought I check with you guys before I tear out what's left of my hair.
I've got an L2K (in the photo) that has a buzz centered around C (most noticeable on G5, but also on on D10.
It's not fret buzz as near as I can tell - I'm pretty good at setups and I've just spent the last hour trying everything in that domain. The source seems to be somewhere on/at the body. It's not my pickguard - took that off thinking it might be the problem. The buzz is audible with the bass not being plugged in.

Any ideas where to look next? This is nuts.

my G&L had that and the culprit was where one tuner, where the clover leaf sits in the shaft. It was vibrating same way and took me a while to find. I fixed it with one drop of super glue where the shaft and clover leaf meet. Do I get bonus points if that is the issue?

Yep, tuner clover for me. Replaced it and all was right with the world. At least my bass world.

Wow, that's a pisser. It did turn out to be one of the tuners and not the G-string but the D-string.
When I capo'd at 5 and then held the D clover while striking the string it went away. I swear that the buzz was coming from the body but after reading yours and the reference post, you guys nailed it.

Hmmm. Not that I'm aware. Assuming you know you can get them from G&L?

But... they changed the tuning key length at some point. Newer basses have a longer tuning key (which they sell).

I like G&L just fine but since I’ve never, ever had something like this happen in my 45 years or so of playing bass, I’m not inclined to simply replace the tuners with the same design unless I don’t have a better option.

Hipshot made ultralight keys for G&L for a few years, with a tapered aluminum post like usual. No idea if Hipshot can still offer them custom.

JB2 Tribs are gateway basses. The one thing to remember for those intending to mod is the fact that both pickups are the same size.

And serveral pickup makers (Nordstrand for sure, maybe Bartolini as well) will make you a set of neck and bridge pickups in neck pickup covers if you contact them directly.

They do, but they only sell the one with the longer shaft for newer basses (my 2014 MJ4 has the longer shaft, my other two earlier G&Ls have a shorter shaft).

Have you tried just squeezing the shaft tighter around the paddle using a rag (for protection) and a channel locks? I’ve solved this problem several times over my 45 years this way.

Person,by name of Memo,in the parts department,is real helpful,and knowledgeable concerning G&L guitars. Asked him about some strap buttons,and the COA,on my 91 L2000 Commemorative bass,and he mailed them out to me. Great customer service.

I need to get in touch with someone as well. My D tuner is dented and very loose where the peg is riveted to the stem of it. It works but I’m waiting for a good turn to snap it off completely. I’m not sure if it was sent to me that way but I doubt it was. I can’t remember banging it on anything though. I got it during the Pandemic. I haven’t taken it out! All my gigs were cancelled!
