G&L Club Part 7

Thanks! That was referenced above, and I assume Craig knows what he's talking about. He was certainly right about the spec sheet not mentioning it. I have no specific info to confirm or deny it myself.
Oh. I missed the post above :roflmao:

I've finally joined the G&L club and picked up a new (to me) American made 2015 LB-100 in sonic blue and absolutely love it. It sounds fantastic the neck feels amazing. I currently own as I call it the "Leo Trio" a MM stingray 5, a MIA fender J bass and now the G&L Lb-100 and I've gotta say I kind of want to trade or sell my other basses to go all G&L. Fantastic instruments!

Hey all! Here's my latest vid featuring my L-1000 CLF in natural (and my EBMM Cutlass). Phat tone citay right here! The L1k is actually my first G&L ever and I really dig it!

Nice comparison vid man - I subscribed on your YT channel and will check out some other vids when I get a break :-)

I had a similar initial response to the lb100 and the l1000. Even with alnico5 pickups,i thought both basses sounded harsh with the factory daddario strings. (Couldn’t imagine the wunkay with an mfd)
The lb got a set of chromes, and the wunkay got a set of DR pure blues. Big difference.
And my jb2 has a supersoft set of Labella low tension flatwounds which sound fantastic on it.

I'll admit upfront that I like both modern, bright bass tones and more vintage thumpy/growly tones - I appreciate both - both I feel that the stock D'Addario strings bring out a harsh treble tone that I cant seem to EQ out. I can hear how it would be a tone many use, but combined with the fact I like running some mild overdrive in my signal I find my favourite strings for the L series basses are DR Fat Beams (for bright sizzly tone), EB Slinkies (for standard bright roundwound rock tone) or GHS Pressurewounds for a more vintage tone without going to flats. I like the tone of certain flats (EB Cobalts, D'Addario Chromes), I just don't like the feel.
This post also reminded me I need to try some Pure Blues at some stage!

Congratulations! LB-100s are great!

I feel like I could have posted most of this! Going to try GHS Balanced Nickels, DR Sunbeams and now after reading a few posts here the DR Pure Blues!

Hi all! Just took delivery of a uesd (near mint) Tribute L2000. It's my first G&L and I'm stoked to get to know it. I do have a couple questions about the bass, though, namely regarding the EQ. It seems like 90% of the audible adjustment in the bass knob occurs in the last 10% of travel, between 9/10 and full on. Further, in passive mode it seems like most of the volume drops out of the signal when I bring the bass control back more than that initial 10% reduction. That volume drop isn't nearly as produced in passive mode. Is that normal? And if not, what can I do to remedy that? It just seems like I'm missing a little bit of the functionality of the bass like this.

That doesn’t sound normal per my experience. Not sure what the fix is.

Hate to say it on a GL page, but the one tone on that Cutlass was amazing.
In defense of the compared Wunkay, i have a definite tonal preference for rosewood fretboards over maple on my Fenderz. Both my GLs have rosewood fretboards.
Also,on a purely superficial level, I’ve never liked the look of EB headstocks.
There, that feels better. :D

Interesting. I haven’t noticed it as much with the bass and treble controls as I have with the volume control. My L-2500 seems to get a large amount of its volume from the last 10% of the volume knob. Love the bass otherwise, but that’s the one complaint I’ve found with mine.

I’ve considered talking to the luthier I go to and asking if replacing the volume pot seems worthwhile, but I haven’t done that yet. I know that should be a reversible mod, but I’m not yet sure that it’s a big enough deal to me to want to make any changes.

I remember experiencing something very similar when I had my 1998 MIA L-2500. I learned to live with it. The bass control is super useful on L series basses within its, errrr, useful range. I think somebody here or elsewhere suggested that this may be due to the wrong type of bass pot (not volume) chosen, but I never got around to verifying that theory.

Yesterday's project: installed an MFD HB in the L1K/L2K neck position on a Climax bass. The switches were supposed to be series/north coil/parallel and series/south coil/parallel but I didn't notice that the vendor sent me on/off/on switches (instead of the on/on/on switches I ordered) until after installation. So right now it just has series/off/parallel on the switching. Vol/vol/tone for the controls - passive only.

The pickup plate is one I 3D printed out of black ABS - I may do another and acetone vapor polish it for a shiny finish at some point. But for now I'm enjoying it as part of my small L1K family.
