I've already blown most of next year's Gear Acquisition Budget, but I'd really like this in an L-2000, Santa!

Yeah, I'd love to see that. But with wood binding around the body, to tie in the roasted neck.

You know, G&L seems to be doing better with their flamed bodies. They seem to be consistently appealing. I've seen a few older ones in the wild that were not too...good looking.

You wouldn't believe but 2 months ago I spec'd out a 5 string version of that trans black L2000. Got a bit nervous about the price and opted instead to grab a Fender US J 5.
The J 5 is an excellent bass. Guess what? It sits unplayed in it's case.

Sorry - to clarify the Fender was 2nd hand, picked it up for $1800 AUD. It really is a superb bass, and sounds good. Its sounds very different to an L series G&L is all so it hasn't found it's spot yet in my bass collection.

The L2500 that I spec'd out came to $3500 AUD. I couldn't justify that much, especially having almost no gigs with COVID19, although I think I would have been a lot happier if I had have gone through with that purchase.

I think my opportunity to grab a new custom L2500 has gone, but maybe I might pick one up 2nd hand or trade the Fender straight for one....an L2500 is scarce here in Australia is all.

With COVID I'm not playing bass as much and my interest in guitar is perked back up. I've been itching for a tele for years but never found one I liked enough to buy. Have been considering
an ASAT Special, probably one of the Tributes. Any experience here?

Similar feeling here. Many videos online comparing ASATs and Teles. I think the improvements to the design that Leo made are worth serious consideration. Tough choice though, especially if you’re like me, when you don’t have or plan to have as many guitars as basses.

I just sold my Tribute ASAT Special in the classifieds. It sounded great (like an American ASAT Special) and was well built. My buddy had an American one. Like with G&L basses versus Tribute build quality and materials are better on the US models but sound is mostly the same.

I sold it because my left hand did not agree with the neck profile. As a result I rarely played it and always played my wider necked acoustic. Replaced the ASAT with a Godin Summit Classic CT HB. If my hand agreed with the neck, I would have happily kept it.

I have a ‘93 Legacy, and I’ve had a ‘95 Legacy and a ‘95 ASAT Special. I’ve had the ‘93 since about 1997, it’s outlasted a dozen guitars, including the other two G&Ls, American Deluxe Fenders, and a slew of import and parts axes.

The ‘95 ASAT was just a shade more comfortable playing-wise, because I liked the 7.5” fretboard it had vs the Legacy’s 12”, but I let it go because I thought the neck pickup could be a little too bright. It was kind of brittle, whereas the Legacy was much warmer. The bridge pickup in the ASAT was great, though. Both on was just OK. I guess I just prefer the more traditional Strat and Tele tones for the neck or mixed pickup tones.

I will note that my Legacy has the Duncan SSL2 pickups, before they started using in-house pickups for that model. The ‘95 Legaxy had the G&L pickups. G&L’s were a little brighter alone, a little quackier when in the 2 & 4 positions. The Duncan bridge pickup was too weak (the G&L was good), so I swapped the bridge pickup out to the Duncan SSL6 hot single coil. Much better now.

I own a tribby S500. Got it cheap used. Sound and plays great!

Thanks all. I like my necks slim and fast - so this all sounds good. In the guitars I currently have there’s some Taylor acoustics and a Gibson 335, but I have one of the slender neck 335’s from the early’80s.

In basses I like the slim Jazz necks the best.

If pickups on the ASAT Special emulate a P-90 as I’ve read this should be about perfect.

I just bought a tribute legacy. I’m just learning at the moment, but i like it so far. The guitar player who records stuff for my YouTube videos came to test it the other day and he said that it was also pretty nice. The only downside is that it’s kinda heavy.

Nice! I have a Candy Apple Red, matching headstock, and parchment pickguard Tribute Legacy that I really like. The main thing I will change soon, after many years with it, is the saddles. The Tribute saddles are functional, but have a sharper edge than the USA saddles and don't return to pitch quite a smoothly as the rounder witness point on the USA saddles when using the tremolo. I'd really like to wire in some mini-buckers, but would also have to get a new pickguard for that. It's a really nice playing and great sounding Strat-style guitar, though.

So.... my empress SB-1.... it's built.... and it's arrived with Greg at Rocket Music.... but whoever put it together didn't notice the quartersawn maple neck option.... Back it goes!

The good news: it's just 6.9 lbs

Yes, it is. MSRP for the SB-1 is $1,928; non-standard neck profile is $150 extra. I believe its usual to see online prices being 70% of that, so $1,455 (if not lower)

I added on empress and quartersawn options, which seemed cheap for the benefits they bring. But international shipping will be $$$ and UK customs charges will be $$$$$$..... To tell the truth, I've half-forgotten what I'm expecting to pay once that's all done, all I know is that its within my budget. The prospect of a shell pink p-bass with a 1½" neck and an MFD pickup distracts me from that mess!
