G&L Club Part 7

Hello G&L group!

My G&L L-2500 fretless was bought used and listed that it has the K-switch mod. The spec sheet does not show that option was put on there. Assuming it was a mod done afterwards.

Also, I am finding I am not liking what I am hearing. It's almost as if I am getting this strange imbalance, too much in the lows and highs and almost like it's out of phase or something. It is unpleasant and fatiguing. Not even sure if my terminology is right. I don't have the amp set on scooped, adjusting bass and treble does not take the problem away entirely.

I used to twiddle with the amp settings with the L-2500 but I noticed this problem when I added an additonal cab (same model cab). Doesn't seem to be the rig because my Stingray sounds fantastic through it.

I suppose I could disconnect the second cab whenever I use the G&L and try different strings. Then I started wondering if there could be a problem with the wiring. Throwing it out there. I don't have experience with modding/wiring but if it's straightforward I could try, or I will take it to a tech. Any help would be appreciated!

Probably talking to Memo, who is one of my favorite people I've never met. He's helped me out twice now and has really gone above and beyond to fix things. The level of service G&L provides goes a long way towards easing any concern I might have about the negatives we hear sometimes about QC or custom order accuracy. The negatives aggregate on forums, but the positive side is worth talking about too.

I'll be honest - a set of Dimarzio Model Js would be perfect but those guys refuse to do a 5 string set. I have asked them if they would even consider a customer set and they reply flatly with "no".
I'm really Jonesing for a 5 string Jazz ceramic adjustable pole piece MFD pickup.

Bizarre to me Dimarzio won't do a model J 5 set.

It's relatively (very) cheap, but man, it's sooo good! I'm super impressed with it. Almost all reviews online are positive, but it's still nice to buy something that lives up to the 'hype'.
The saddle-lock bridge is really good, the paint is beautiful, and the neck feels great. The neck is narrow, but a little (very little) fatter than my fender jazz basses. I really like that, it feels very natural and easy to play.
It's a little heavy, but nothing out of the extraordinary. The only slightly negative (and it's a very minor) thing, is that the neck and headstock have a yellowish tint, that is not as pleasing as some of my other basses. I prefer natural wood or vintage tint, this is kinda in between. But hey, after a couple of years that'll be fine.

Love the tone and your playing. My buddy has one of these and what a hell of a bass for that price!

I guess it boils down to the cost of R&D, retooling etc that makes it too hard basket for them. shame really because for me the Model J is a perfect different take on the J pickup. I most like the adjustable pole pieces. I really appreciate the ability to adjust the output of each string.

Any how - derail over. The J 5 may be on the chopping block, as good as the instrument is.

Hey guys - comparing to MFD humbuckers of the L series and the MFD P of the SB series, are they similar output?

I'm looking at putting together a P flavoured bass. My #1 bass is always my L2000, but I really like a P bass which I will admit the L2000 doesn't quite do. The issue I've had in the past is typical P pickups have a lot less output, and therefore drive my pedals and amp differently, resulting in lower output generally.

A Dimarzio Model P nearly does it but I don't like the tone (it's got a kinda harsh hi-mid thing going on).

I heard the MFD P is a little warmer, but still has the high output - is this true? This sounds perfect.

For me, yes. I have another P-style bass that covers the more traditional P ground very well. My LB-100 came from a good friend and has a lot of sentimental value, but I preferred the SB-1 and and my other P-bass for studio work. I had a brand new MFD hanging around and decided to try it in the LB-100. Sure enough, it gave me the deeper, broader, more in-your-face tone I was looking for. I find the MFD to be very responsive to touch, so with some filters and EQ, I can get deep dub or middy punk or scooped slap or bright solo tones.

I may go ahead and put the SB-1 up for sale now. There are things about the SB-1 I still prefer, but the sentimental value of my LB-100, along with the MFD, wins out for me.
