G&L Kiloton

Thanks for the replies regarding the difference between series and parallel!

Ill give the pickup an adjustment to see if that mellows the bass out a bit. Waiting until I get the new pickguard and volume pot to see what happens first! G&L clearly spend some time on setting the basses up at the factory.

One of the first things I did to my L2000 was drop the pups as low as they could go....made a noticeable difference.

I recently got an SB after playing a P for many moons. It was a hard transition for me to turn down the volume pot (I really don't know why, but it was!) but now i would recommend you try that, play around with scaling back you volume about a 1/4. you might really love the tone and not need to pad it. try it! you'll like it!

Took some advice from everyone!

Dropped the pickup down a good bit, then used the pole pieces to adjust for the radius of the strings. Bingo! Nice and even with the P-basses!

Was able to drop the action a tad more, played with the intonation a bit just to get used to the locking bridge. What a nice piece to work with! Combined with the infinite and easy adjustability of the pickup, this is an easy set-up!

Thanks all! Looking forward to giggin the bass this weekend! Will post before and after pics when I get the black pickguard. Not sure when that will be!

Just received the black pickguard from my supplier! While the white was growing on me, i like the black way better. Perhaps a tinted or cream color pickguard, but the bright white was just a bit much!

Funny that the pickguard is what's keeping me from buying a Kiloton. :D Maybe, if the pickguard wasn't so P Bass like I'd go for one. :cool:

I think they are about 40 years too late..I would think Ernie ball MM owns that market. They should put the effort into improving their current products some of which have KNOWN issues and they keep pumping them out.also customer service is sub par just my opinion ✌️

I dont think id go for a custom build. I hear the lead time is 8 to 10 weeks, if all goes well, which doesnt seem to be the case a lot of the times. Dont get me wrong, the fit and finish of the instruments is spectacular for the price!

Honestly, I STILL havent received my replacement volume pot from them. I went for the lightest Kiloton available when I ordered mine. It was still factory direct though which was nice!

Get a hold of your local G&L dealer and see what they can find out about whats available at the factory.

They sure are, so much so that it can be a bit of a problem (for me, at least). I love the tonal options I can get from my L-2500, but it doesn't get along well with some of the effects I sometimes use - which is probably why I favor my LB-100 about 90% of the time these days.

As much as I love the aesthetics of the Kiloton and the idea of a passive, single-humbucker G&L, the MFD pickup is the reason why I'll probably never spring for one. Too bad, because it is SUCH a cool-looking bass!

It's certainly true that if you're convinced that the only way to get your tone from a bass, regardless of which bass, is to turn the volume knob all the way up, you probably want to look elsewhere than G&L. To me, the ability to maintain good tone with controllable volume in a passive instrument is one of G&L's real beauties - across the whole product line, in my experience (haven't tried M's yet).

I'm fairly sure the pickup and its position are exactly the same. The Kiloton's only feature missing on the L-1500 is the single coil mode, so you could just add that. The 1500 adds the bass control and active mode, which you may as well keep, though I never understood why the 1500 needs a bass cut (maybe the 1505 does), and I didn't find active mode useful until I did the resistor mod to cut the insane amount of treble boost.

I love the Kiloton's simplicity and I usually prefer passive basses, but I'd like to try one with the preamp from the M-series. When I had an L-1500, I thought a three-band EQ might have worked nicely with the single pickup in that position.

Not a perfectly accurate method but it looks fairly the same to me.
